What do you do if you want to turn your Volunteer Management internship into a job?

As it goes, I did turn my volunteering internship/opportunity into a full time career. More then showing initiative, what matters is whether you like what you do and if yes then you don't show initiative but actually own the initiative you are volunteering for. if you don't like what you do, first find your passion spot and work on those projects.

Here's a very pragmatic approach to answering the question directly: 1. turn the internship job description (JD) into an employee job description to make it very clear what the differences are, for recruiting and potential transition of the applicant from the volunteer role to the employee role. 2. Create a contract based on the JD with the usual parameters and deliverables clearly defined. 3. Create an orientation, training and induction process to cover the role and expectations of an employee. 4. Scheduled review sessions to find out how the new employee is doing and how well you are doing as an "employer" from their perspective. 5. Engage them in mentoring the next candidate who fills the volunteer intern role.

That is exactly my intention---Volunteers interested in trying new work--never done before who are looking for a few hours & possibly considering working mornings or 4 hours a day in a school for a unique program....we have that here. Or an afternoon in our office making calls to create new interesting work for so many more people and states.

An internship is given to people for the purpose of proving their worth to a company for a future career. No company wants to hire an interne that does not produce any value to their company. There are many reasons people apply for an internship, but all reasons will identify with their future needs. I take the initiative to learn. I learn the roles that compliment mine allowing me to not only do my job well but understand how what I do affects others and vice versa.

One thing I have found helpful is to focus, respect and always act professional in all levels. You need not entertain inside conflicts and gossips. I can say in some instances you could not need lead, only work as team with the projects leaders, remember you still here to learn. Make you always humbled your self in all time, and you don't take side on the internal conflicts.

What can be helpful is to always follow lines of communications of your organisation. Make show you always mind you tone of voice and be flexible honest and sincere, take care of yourself and for your colleagues when they face workload you must be willing to help. You need to always mind your boundaries and try not to be so talkative sometimes people get bored. For example I've seen people loosing the opportunities during their internship because they were too much to their superiors and always involved in conflicts

As I already said, networking is the key to success in today's time. Yes, it's true. If you have a good network, it will help you to build your career in the domain you want. But if you are lacking in the same then you have to be ready for the hustle. Create some bonding with your colleagues, supervisor, and Seniors, attend events, and talk shows and build up relations with the attendees. They will help you to get the job as a volunteer based on your previous experience and as you have a good connection with them they also know about your skills, So, it's a win-win situation.

Unfortunately, any organization that does not actively strive to retain 100% of its corporate memory may not, in my 50+ years of experience in the world of work AND three years of the rolling COVID-19 lockdown, have anyone familiar with your contributions to connect with when you are available.

Example people who misused the organisation's resources and destroyed carelessly misplace resources no one will be interested to keep such person in the workplace.

The key is to keep your communication lines. I can say try to not to communicate more about your goals but you can work hard and show your talents and skills in a very good positive way. Try to join available trainings opportunities. Show your gaol by achieving the organisation goal so that they can see a potential then you might be given a chance to express what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve your goals.

I'd also say it's key to demonstrate your passion for the cause. What is it about this charity you want to continue to work for? If people are truly passionate and committed to an organisation, the charity won't want to let them escape and will work hard to keep you.

Become invaluable by solving a problem. If the Organization does not see your value, another organization will. No one ever pays or hires someone they already have. Become someone they don’t have and someone they can’t afford to lose.

ALWAYS BE A 'participant-observer' in every workplace, even as an unpaid intern. You can often learn more from an experience that did not lead to paid salaried employment or a consulting contract, ie, what many would call a 'failed experiment', than professional-and-financial multiple successes.
