What algorithms are essential for an AI Engineer?

Linear regression will be the first algorithm you will learn after understanding statistics and linear algebra. It is the simplest supervised and widely used algorithm which models a relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. It finds the best fit line in the distribution.

As an AI engineer there isn’t one algorithm more worth knowing than another. You HAVE to know them all to a certain extent. Not in all their iterations and versions but any ML/AI Engineer should be able to pull on the right tool for the right job. So strive to learn them all.

LR is first step in case of supervise learning that means learning from labeled data. It's best algorithm to start with due to its simplicity and interpretability which AI engineers can understand easily according to the problem statement. Bottom line is Linear Regression is the base model to start with and on top of it you can use advance algorithm to improve your model further.

As an AI Engineer, my approach heavily relies on linear regression, statistics, and linear algebra. Linear regression is vital for creating predictive models, allowing me to anticipate outcomes based on data inputs. These algorithms form the foundation for building and improving AI systems across various domains.

Linear regression works well when you have labeled data, e.g. a picture of a cat and a tag that identifies it as "cat". Its main use is that you can identify a clear relationship between independent variables (= features) and on dependent variable (= target). The classic example is to identify house prices based on features like location, size, age, number of bedrooms etc.

For me, essential algorithms as an AI Engineer include: Supervised Learning Algorithms (e.g., Linear Regression, Decision Trees, SVMs). Unsupervised Learning Algorithms (e.g., K-Means Clustering, PCA, DBSCAN). Neural Networks (e.g., CNNs, RNNs, Transformers). Reinforcement Learning Algorithms (e.g., Q-Learning, Deep Q Networks). Optimization Algorithms (e.g., Gradient Descent, Adam, RMSprop).

Linear regression is the most fundamental algorithm as it is the basis for mostly all deep learning algorithms. Someone who understands really well how a linear regression work together with gradient descent is ready to see more complex algorithms just as a linear regression on caffeine.

K-Means Clustering is another pivotal algorithm in my repertoire. This unsupervised learning technique is instrumental for segmenting datasets into clusters based on similarities. My approach involves identifying the optimal number of clusters (k) and iteratively refining their centers for better data grouping. This method is particularly effective in pattern recognition and data segmentation tasks. This helps in quickly finding items, keeping the inventory organized, and saving time and space.

K-means clustering is often a better choice when dealing with large datasets where efficiency and speed are crucial and where the data flows into relatively distinct clusters. It is very efficient when the number of Ks can be reasonably estimated beforehand, as K-means requires this as an input. K-means excels in scenarios where clusters are of similar size and density, making it well-suited for segmenting data into clear, non-hierarchical groups. In these cases, the simplicity and speed of K-means are a good choice over more complex hierarchical methods.

However, one challenge of neural networks is their explainability: You might have an idea whether a system works, but not exactly how.

Reinforcement learning algorithms are similar to children that learn by playing: You (loosely) define the rules of the game, provide data and then the system learns by playing one iteration after another. The system continuously updates its behaviour according to the outcomes of the prior iteration and to whatever it should optimize.

Reinforcement learning is a machine learning paradigm centered on learning through trial and error, where an agent improves its performance based on rewards or penalties received for its actions. This method is effective in scenarios like training robots, playing games, or controlling systems. Its strength lies in the ability to learn from limited data, solve problems sequentially, and focus on achieving long-term objectives, making it a powerful tool for tasks where explicit instructions are impractical or unavailable.

Reinforcement learning is an extremely powerful way to reach solutions. Apart from the end-result, it has the potential to offer amazing insights about the path taken to get to that result. I have a strong feeling that the next AI revolution will emerge from reinforcement learning, and it will be as quantum a leap as LLMs are today.

In my view, to excel as an AI Engineer, you should have a good understanding across a broad range of techniques and algorithms, including Logistic Regressions, Linear Regressions, Decision Trees, Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines, etc. The decision-making process is nuanced, often entailing a tradeoff between multiple factors (which frequently derive from your original requirements): accuracy for ensuring the model’s precision, robustness for making the model reliable to changes to the inputs, interpretability for understanding the decision making process of the model and deployment efficiency for guaranteeing adequate performance and memory footprint once deployed.

Starting at DARPA in 1999 on machine learning I found that so many academics wanted to achieve "tabula rasa" learning. In other words, they wanted to create a system which learned from a blank sheet. The problem is that nothing in biology works this way. Infants are born with primitive behaviors that enable them to suck, chew, kick, grasp, and perception behaviors for eye tracking, facial recognition and many others. Without these there would be no hope for continuous adaptive learning. We need a foundation and this foundation needs to be more than maps and semantic knowledge. We need high utility, embodied behaviors that allow robots or programs to remain safe. Real intelligence isn't just semantic. It works on and with the real world.

All algorithms are good to know, none is essential, really. However, we need to know the intricacies of any algorithm that we are actually using in production. Unless that is the case, we cannot derive optimum performance from it. In fact, there is danger of missing some nuance that makes it unsuitable for that use case in particular.

Reflecting these in the context of aspirational production-grade AI, all the mentioned algorithms collectively contribute to the ability to engage users in natural, human-like conversations. Linear regression may be used to predict user intent based on historical data, while k-means clustering can segment users for personalized interactions. Decision trees guides conversational flow & neural networks might drive NLP capabilities. Genetic algorithms could optimize conversation paths - reinforcement learning can improve a conversational AI agents' performance based on user interactions. An AI Engineer, not only needs to be proficient in these algorithms, but also skilled in selecting and tuning them to work within a complex AI system.

Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are invaluable for classification tasks, offering robustness especially in high-dimensional spaces. Random Forests, an ensemble learning method, are excellent for both classification and regression, providing improved accuracy through decision trees aggregation. Gradient Boosting algorithms, such as XGBoost and LightGBM, have gained popularity for their effectiveness in handling large datasets and predictive performance. PCA is another crucial tool, particularly useful in dimensionality reduction while preserving the dataset's essential characteristics. Also, understanding Bayesian algorithms can be beneficial, especially in probabilistic modeling and decision-making under uncertainty.

An AI engineer should be familiar with a broad range of algorithms, as each serves different purposes within the AI field. An AI engineer should not only understand how these algorithms work but also when and how to apply them effectively to solve complex problems.

Essential AI algorithms for engineers in 2023: 1. CNNs: Image/video analysis in computer vision. 2. RNNs: Sequential data analysis in natural language processing. 3. LSTMs: Time series analysis, language translation. 4. Transformers: Language understanding (BERT, GPT). 5. Random forests: Regression, classification in tabular data. 6. GBMs: Predictive accuracy in structured data. 7. SVMs: Binary classification, high-dimensional spaces. 8. AutoML: Automated machine learning. 9. GNNs: Social network analysis, biology applications. 10. GANs: Synthetic data generation, anomaly detection.

All of the above. They are useful in different cases and any AI engineer should have an understanding of all the standard approaches there are.

All above are essentials and apart from above natural language processing, large language models also could be one which AI engineer should know about it. As an AI engineer, knowing the concept of different techniques is very much essential basic things to know.
