I feel like these types of responses are quite lazy. Understanding the why is key to making it a good conversation. If someone said they support animal rights I’d try to understand the reason for it even if I disagree. If someone gives me a good argument to why it won’t necessarily change my mind as I love meat but I can see from their perspective why it’s not for them. Maybe there is an easier way to consume meat and not harm the animal prior to processing. Maybe there are more humane ways. Until that day comes I’d say enjoy your veggies!

Straw man fallacies are employed both accidentally and purposefully. Either way, their use does not have a good return on investment. Using straw man fallacies is a deflective debate strategy, and overuse creates windows where your opponent can eventually see which topics you either want to avoid or do not have a confident grasp of. It also places you at a disadvantage, because a deficit in active listening makes it more difficult to make counterpoints that gain any traction or further your understanding of the problem. Any point made using a straw man fallacy is a non-starter, causing the proponent to “grasp for straws”. Compromise is best achieved through active listening and strong counterpoints from both sides in a respectful manner.
