Partner with stakeholder to being experiential learning to the classroom. Create opportunities for student to work directly with agencies, organizations, community group, private industry, and government, on real world problems. Everyone benefits from this approach.

Collaborating with local cultural and international organizations is one of the best practices that is often overlooked. These collaborations can help to nurture authentic relationships and provide opportunities for study abroad, faculty and staff immersion programs, and for international students and faculty to be recruited and retained.

Once, I inherited the task of closing an MOU between my college and a nearby high school which had stalled for several months. Distrust and hurt ran deep on both sides. But I knew my counterpart from nonprofit work, so I called and invited him to lunch. Afterward, I pulled out a pad and asked him to tell me all while I took notes. When he finished, I asked him to verify that I had captured his side’s concerns. Then I drew 3 columns: HS nonnegotiables, college nonnegotiables, and areas for compromise. We dropped each issue into the appropriate column, explaining when an item was nonnegotiable. With improved understanding, the MOU finished in record time and signed soon after. Transparency and listening are critical to all partnerships.

This is great! Sometimes it takes a little extra initiative like an invite to lunch to brainstorm pros and cons in order to compromise on a solution that works for both parties instead of just blowing off the idea altogether.

Promoting respect & valuing diversity sound good, but are rarely executed effectively. In order to truly respect and value differences, we first have to identify our biases. The first step is to admit bias exists. Even MSIs must do this. Respecting others & valuing diversity are action steps. What is your institution actively doing to ensure that students, staff, and faculty feel respected and valued? Mandates and one-time training aren't enough. Biases must be continually interrogated and faced. Everything from onboarding to teaching evaluations, to T&P, to disciplinary policies & the enforcement thereof must be continually interrogated for bias. And please, stop asking people of color to do the diversity work for you w/o compensation.

Reflection is the most authentic approach to create a culture of improvement. Ongoing evaluation is the hallmark of quality improvement. Creating a culture requires planning and intentionality. Some ideas that may contribute to developing the necessary collaboration and skills for teams to engage meaningfully include workshops, professional learning communities, and mentorship opportunities. Including stakeholders who can present a variety of different lenses allow a more holistic and comprehensive understanding of a specific units progress towards their goals.

This concept hinges on necessity, requiring a genuine thirst for learning, clear communication fostering shared goals, and advancement in skills or knowledge. It creates a mutually beneficial scenario for both local and global stakeholders, meeting expectations. The focus extends beyond progress, emphasizing crucial factors like cultural awareness, cross-cultural competence, alignment, international accreditation processes, compliance with global laws, and awareness of trends for overall success. In conclusion, genuine need and clear communication leading to an MOU, with well-defined terms, will undoubtedly be advantageous and meet expectations.
