Offer Stage: Received an offer for $72,000 plus standard benefits, but believe your experience justifies a higher salary. Negotiation: Politely requested $80,000 and discussed the possibility of enhanced benefits, explaining the value he could bring to the team. The basics of negotiation are knowing yourself and your opposite side. First, assess your core professional strengths regarding qualifications/certifications for the job, achievements/awards/recognitions, current salary, aspirations, market value for your profile, and finally, the "walk-away price (minimum salary you will accept." Research online and talk to experts in the field. Next, evaluate the potential employer in terms of their needs, how you fit in the role, what value you bring to the organization regarding its growth & success, and their salary benchmarks for the position. Before starting the salary negotiation, please know your USP and value proposition for the organization and the role.

Know your worth and also offer a wide range. If the job is a good fit, there are many ways for both sides to come to a meeting point. This not always financial so be sure to know exactly what would make you happy- compensation and other elements.

Self-awareness is a crucial aspect of a successful career in recruiting. Understanding your worth, value, and the unique advantages you bring to the table is essential. By analyzing your previous salary, market rates, and cost of living, you can determine a minimum acceptable salary. This clarity not only facilitates easier conversations about salary expectations but also empowers you to confidently decline offers that do not meet your standards, knowing your limits and maintaining your professional integrity.

Always figure out your "floor" base salary so you know when to walk away or counter. That number is determined by not just how much you need in order to cover your bills but by what is fair and commensurate for your level of experience. Check sites such as Salary.com, Levels.fyi, Glassdoor as well as online groups for your industry. Ask your recruiter friends as well. If you live in a state that has pay transparency laws, it makes things significantly easier (although some companies have been known to post ridiculous ranges that are just as unhelpful as not posting them at all)! If the salary isn't posted, it's absolutely OK to ask at the recruiter screen. Better to know upfront than to waste time!

Research the Company - Company Culture: Explore the company’s culture, values, and financial health. Glassdoor and LinkedIn company reviews can provide valuable insights. - Current Employees: Reach out to current or former employees to get a sense of the company’s compensation structure and benefits.

When negotiating salary and benefits, researching the company is crucial. Understand their industry standards and financial health. This knowledge empowers you to negotiate confidently, ensuring your demands align with what the company can offer.

Ask an outside recruiter for the range before the interview. They should know it and be able to provide it. When an inside recruiter asks what you are looking for, you can 1. Try to postpone your response with something like, It's too early to talk about salary. I am much more interested in the job and the people with whom I will be working, and then share a success story or ask a question about the role. 2. Ask them for the range, and say you will tell them if you can work within in 3. Ask them for the budget for the position, same follow-up response If pressed for your salary requirements, give a range based on your research and your market value.

Salary discussions during an interview can be tricky; and timingis critical. As a general rule, don't bring up money until the interviewer brings it up. Not only could you hurt yourself by offering a lower number (and lose money), you could also take yourself out of the running if what you're asking is higher than what the company could offer. For these two reasons, it is highly recommended to wait until either 1) the interviewer brings it up, or 2) you are pressed for your salary requirements. If pressed, go with stating a "range" that not only works for YOU but is competitive in your market.

Timing isn't just key, it's critical. And there is a big secret and here it is: When negotiating, as a general rule, the first one to say a number loses. That's it. It's fair if they push you for an answer; it is OK to not want to be pushed and to refuse to be pushed. Having a salary discussion is always good whether or not you want the job; it is nice to be wanted. It also gives you a data point on salary. When they bring up money, they say a number first, ask if that is a solid offer. If they hedge, let then know you would like to work there and you are open to an offer, just not that one. They ask you how much you want, do not say a number. Ask then what you are worth to them. Courtesy counts in negotiating to a win/win finish.

When salary does come up, be prepared. Also, if you have a legitimate justification for your salary and it can't be met, be prepared to walk away.

Bringing up compensation too early can signal that it’s your main focus, but delaying too long might limit your negotiating power. Once they initiate, confidently discuss your expectations, knowing your worth and the value you bring to the table.

I think your position in negotiation doesn’t depend just on your intrinsic value, but it is something based on other factors such as how competitive your job is in market, how long it has been since the company started to find a proper candidate for its vacancy. So if you know more about market and vacancy, you would have a better strategy in negotiation.

When it comes time for your annual review, how prepared are you to negotiate a salary increase? Follow my 3-step method beforehand, so you can enter into negotiations with confidence: 1) research the going rate in your market for your specific role 2) have a list of recent contributions or positive impacts you've made since you're last review. Be sure to include metrics, when possible. 3) be prepared with an alternative to a salary increase. In today's economy, companies may not be able to give you what you want in terms of a salary increase, so it's up to you to come up with alternatives such as more vacation time, a one-time bonus, paying for ongoing learning or certifications for you, etc. Remember, be confident in your value!

Shift the focus from cost to investment, making your request compelling and showcasing your worth.

If you don't understand your value and how to communicate it, salary negotiations might not go well. You are selling your ability to do the job. What do you bring that is different than the competition?

You can also try to negotiate a 6-month review that can give you a slight bump in salary prior to your one-year review. Assuming you meet the 6 month objectives, thus could be a way to get to the salary you desire after year one.

Negotiate Benefits - Beyond Salary: Consider other aspects like bonuses, stock options, health insurance, remote work options, flexible hours, and professional development opportunities. - Prioritize: Know which benefits are most important to you and be prepared to discuss them.

Salary isn’t everything. Benefits like health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and flexible working arrangements are crucial. If the salary is non-negotiable or lower than expected, leverage these benefits to enhance your overall package. Employers often have more flexibility with benefits, so use this to your advantage and negotiate a comprehensive compensation package that meets your needs.

Often salary is focused on almost exclusively in the negotiation process while benefits and other negotiable items are forgotten. I would recommend taking a large-angle view. Consider as many components as possible to give the employer more possible ways to say "yes".

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. I keep on posting this: Practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. Find a coach, not one you have to hire, just someone that know, that knows how to ask hard questions; perhaps a hiring manager you know that is not in your industry, and still, someone that makes hiring decisions, at least hiring decisions at your level or ideally, a higher level. Perhaps a friend's parent. It is what I did when I was starting out in sales/search.

I completely agree with the idea of practice and role-playing. Writing out ideas and practicing on one's own can help. Then role-playing with a mentor, friend, or a career counselor can help decrease jitters and build confidence. While it may feel tempting to skip this step, putting time and energy into quality prep almost always pays dividends.

When negotiating salary during an interview, one thing I've learned from salary negotation experts is the importance of having "non-cash" benefit options ready to discuss. These benefits can really add up and include things like: covering association dues, relocation expenses, tuition reimbursement, stock options, bonuses, car allowance, etc. Consider what items are most important to you -- and ask for those items. If they aren't willing to bend on either cash benefits or non-cash benefits, you may want to re-think if this is the right opportunity for you or not.

I fail to understand the emphasis on “online”. Once you are talking to a recruiter, the source of application (except a third party agency) is irrelevant. The important thingvis to discuss compensation in your FIRST conversation.

Know the rules for your state. In 22 states, there are laws prohibiting employers for asking you for your salary history. A dozen states have pay transparency. AI is perfect for devising negotiation strategy. Stick the details in your prompt and ask for 10 tactics, 10 tactics an employer might use, 10 countertactics, etc. But remember how Mike Tyson says that the best fight plan goes out the window when someone punches you in the nose. Negotiating can be intense. Whatever the outcome, it's in everyone's best interests to come to an agreement quickly. Time kills deals.

The factors that go into salary offers: Client's needs. Your skill level. Your current salary. You negotiating skills. Their willingness to negotiate. Forget market value and focus on your own skills and worth. This is not the NFL where each new record salary sets the market higher. The posted salary ranges are pretty accurate with minimal flex for large corporations; a lot more flex in most smaller companies. Large HR departments mean less flex, as a general rule. If they are willing to give you extra benefits without a lot of hassle, I would be quite curious to know what else they were holding back. There is a lot more than salary and benefits to think about when changing companies.

When revising your resume, tailor it to each job by highlighting relevant skills and using keywords to pass ATS. Showcase achievements with quantifiable metrics, and craft a summary that captures your career highlights without mentioning specific years of experience. Emphasize skills relevant to IT support and infrastructure engineering roles, and include certifications and ongoing education. Highlight remote work experience and skills, and personalize cover letters to explain your interest and address career gaps. Build a strong LinkedIn network and seek recommendations. Ensure your resume is well-formatted, error-free, and easy to read. These elements will help create a persuasive application that stands out.
