How can you use magical realism to add a fantastical element to your story?

Magical realism is one of my favourite genres of all time. As the name suggests, this style of writing delves into finding the extraordinary or magical in our otherwise mundane life. It combines fantasy, supernaturalism, or mysticism with reality. The magical elements are embedded very normally and logically into the narrative of the story without much persuasion.

In works of magical realism, the magical elements are presented in a straightforward, matter-of-fact manner, without being treated as extraordinary or supernatural within the fictional world. It’s Latin American DNA has been passed down through classics like Alfonso Arau’s Like Water for Chocolate, based on the novel by Laura Esquivel. In more recent years, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has implemented the literary device in much of his work, most notably in Pan’s Labyrinth.

As a rule, I don't use the term "magical realism" to describe work that was not created as part of the visual and literary arts movement in the 20th century. A lot of people use the term as a synonym for "fabulism" or "literary fantasy", but I think magical realism and true fantasy have diametrically opposed goals. Fantasy offers an escape from the real world, and substitutes a world which is better, if only by virtue of being more interesting. Magic realism is never about escaping our world--the surreal events that take place are a comment of some kind on our world, and how difficult it is to understand it.

You can do anything in any way you like just so long as it works. (But avoid formulaic instruction—there are no rules and many possibilities in the meaning of "works".)

On a cold winter morning full of snow and among the crowd of cars, traffic and people rushing to get to the office, a blind child asks for help to cross the street. Nobody cares. Suddenly the sound of a singing bird stops everything. Its sound is so beautiful that no one can move. Time stops. No one can see the bird. Everyone closes their eyes and then opens them. People smile. The sound stops. Cars move and people want to cross the street. People see a blind child standing by the sidewalk. Everyone volunteers to help him. A woman takes his hand with a smile. The boy suddenly disappears. What happened? This is the beginning of a magical realism story.

It crafts a world where magic seamlessly intertwines with everyday life, no explanations needed. It's worth no more attention than any other event in someone's life. Characters take the fantastical in stride. It's more about where the story goes rather than magic being used.

One thing I've noticed about extremely passionate fiction writers like myself is their intense itch to just create and explore—without limits. Magical realism gives you that luxury to bring the extraordinary into the seemingly ordinary and then paint it in such a way that would intrigue readers. It gives you the greenlight to build worlds that have only been stuck in your imaginations. You don't just end up building these worlds but allow readers to take a tour around them. Lastly, magical realism gives you the guts to write about themes that are not just unpopular but are screaming for attention without getting any.

In a commercial context, weaving a narrative with magical realism invites the reader to imagine a world in which the impossible or difficult becomes possible or easy. Then you can pull the metaphorical curtain aside to communicate that that world isn't fantastical—it already exists, thanks to you product or service. Done right, this inspires wonder, which dramatically reduces price sensitivity and propensity to act.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” That doesn't have to mean flying saucers, firework-shooting wands, or worm-hole portals either. Magic exists all around us in the things we don't know. I don't know how the motor engine works, but I know cars are getting around just fine either way. That's magic, and even though I know it uses pistons over potions there's no telling what's going on behind closed doors. The only thing that differentiates a magic trick from a plain old trick is that you don't know how it was done. So leave the mystery in place, and reap the magic as a reward.

Hope is the most effective instrument to flux in magical realism! At every stage of storytelling - beginning, middle, and end - it is the hope and protagonist's degree of achievability that drives the story. Irrespective of the genre, establishing hope, seeking, and longings really helps in sweeping the audience into the story, which in turn, forms a sense of relatedness in the audience. In a nutshell, faith moves mountains. So does hope :)

In order to pull off magic in a realistic story, a writer needs to be able offer glimpses into the unknown rather than explosions of power. This can be used effectively to convey suspense and otherworldly elements, especially in a thriller or mystery story. Neil Gaiman's Sandman and American Gods both fall more into the realm of modern fantasy as their magical elements overtake reality, while authors such as Salman Rushdie and Franz Kafka find the space for Magical Realism between the seems of real and unreal.

Include magical elements in your story like they're normal. Describe them vividly, connecting them to everyday life. Make sure the magical parts have a purpose and mix them with regular things to keep it balanced and easy to follow.

Magical realism doesn't have to start big or overwhelm the story line. It can be as subtle as a penny or a dragonfly, popping into the scene as a cue to change perspective. Small magics appear in our daily lives in our own reality, so it's easy to drop it into a story and expand on it. You don't even have to draw attention to it at first; let the reader have that moment of epiphany when they are pulled back to the first placement of the trigger object. "Hey, that's the third time that ladybug has drawn attention to xyz." Then the reader is drawn further into the adventure as it is slowly revealed to them.

For a reader to get all they can get out of a story, they must be able to relate to the character's struggles. So you're character is still dealing with real life problems, but their growth is inspired by things that are beyond real. They mostly have their feet on the ground--the world is mostly like the one we see--but the other side is reaching out to them, guiding them along.

An important element of incorporating magical realism into your fiction is to ensure that there is still a clear sense of what can and can't happen within the magic. For example, time slips may be possible but resurrection is not. Having a clear set of boundaries in which the characters have to function can help drive conflict and move the plot forward.

Magical realism—especially when used in stories rooted in culture and history—can be a mirror to the cultural heritage or legacy that exists shallowly or has been long lost. That's on the part of the reader. For the writer, writing magical realism can turn out to be a test of your imagination and creativity as a creative. It's a reawakening. The heavy use of symbols, imagery, metaphors and all whatnot in a bid to show and not tell the magic unravelling in the story, stirs up your creative juice and allows you to imagine more. It's basically a journey worth every step of the way—both for the reader and the writer.

Or at least, give you hope that it is. It is art and song and teacher that urges you to see with your heart.

Finding a unique, interesting and surprising element for the audience is the most difficult challenge in writing a story in the style of magical realism. Readers' time is important, they are looking for a challenge and a special situation in your story to get away from the real world for a short time and identify with the heroes and anti-heroes. It is important to avoid stereotypes. For example, if a book about consciousness is written in the style of a "blindness" book, it will no longer appeal to the audience, even if the people in the story become deaf instead of blind. Global audiences have very strong memories and will quickly recognize repetitive elements of your story, and you may lose credibility as a writer.

It's easy to stray into big ideas and it's easy to get lost trying to make them bigger. The beauty of magical realism is its ability to balance the real and the surreal. Which is easier said than done. The magical elements included need to have a direct impact to the character's struggles, rather than exist purely for the awe factor.

Rules. Working with magic always means you need to let your audience know what the magic is, what it can and can't do, and what are its hard limits (and consequences of use). Otherwise, you lose the stakes of the plot, scale of your world, and interest of your readers.

Readers may interpret the magical elements differently, so clarity is essential to prevent misunderstandings.

Magical realism can be great, but it is more than just some random inexplicable events in a story. You have to know a little bit about it before using it as inspiration. Study the major references, read as many examples you can and familiarise yourself with the key elements of maginal realism. That way, you will be more at ease to work with - maybe even challenge - the traditions.

As a magical realist I paint what my imagination does with reality when something inanimate or living inspires a creative response. The center of a flower twinkling with dew becomes a jewel; I see a face in a flower. When we slow our minds and tune into the true nature of what we see in the world around us, as it exists in the present moment, the separation between animate and inanimate dissolves and our concept of reality expands.
