How can you tell if you're speaking too fast on the phone?

If you do lots of calls in a day then try to pick your ones for feedback as a mix of ones you felt good about and ones you didn't think were so good.

Just make sure you don't rely too much on this because a metronome is a consistent speed so even being ahead of it you might find you end up being monotone. You should be varying your speed levels to give more importance and slowing down or speaking at a normal.

If the client keeps asking me to repeat what I say. When they ask if their is another person they can speak. But what I find helpful is knowing my products and listening with an aim of understanding the clients need and providing a solution. Also ask open ended questions so that the client can explain what they really want with the help of my professional experience.

A few more things to add: 1. Slow down when you speak. 2. Be aware of the tone of voice when speaking to a customer. 3. Pronounce your words. Add 50% more energy. Underrated tip: Smile when you are on the phone. People can hear a smile.

Another great way to slow your speech is to ask more questions than you just speak. Finding out more about the other person will give you more you can add in value to a conversation while breaking it up for yourself to digest the information.

When I speak to large crowds I speak as though I am speaking to one individual. So it is when speaking on the phone; slow, focused and expressing in the moment. Never rushed, always visual, and calmly.

Key word from my personal experience is - Adaptability. So I'd add: Active Listening: - Pay close attention to the customer's speech rate. Empathy: - In situations where they may be stressed or anxious, a slower and more calming speech rate could be appropriate. Adaptability: - Be Flexible: Recognize that different customers have different preferences. Be flexible in your communication style.

Use external triggers. I was a fast talker and one of my colleagues gave me a hand drawn stop sign. I kept that pinned to my computer for years. It forced me to slow my speech down in order to better serve my clients.

Let the customer drive the conversation. They will naturally set the pace of the phone call to their comfort level. Act as if the person on the other end of the phone is a friend - how would you speak to them?

Speed can be tolerated in most conversations. I'd suggest you focus more on Clarity - sound out complete words, let one word finish before starting the next and avoid filler noises like, er, um, you know, kind off, like etc.
