At the end of the day, you are either representing a company and their business needs or your company and its business need (as a businessman), either way compromising on bandwidth can lead to great disappointments when engaging in business communications. Obviously, for remote workers, a fiber connection straight into the house is the most ideal way to ensure the highest bandwidth. Also, having a good backup plan is important as well. My area suffers quite a bit from frequent power outages that will take down my CSU/DSU and router. My backup currently is quickly relocating to my local town library (2-miles away) which has adequate free bandwidth and private cubicles for completing a few hours of remote laptop work. Fortunately, I only had to do that like on two separate occasions last year for about 2-4 hour stints of time.

It’s a basic need and often overlooked. Get good service. There is nothing worse than garbled and pixelated video. Nothing more disruptive than buffering. Nothing more embarrassing than a video conference cutting out. Make sure the tools support the vision instead of hindering it.

Knowledge about the audience count and geographies is important to choose the right platform for HD video and high network bandwidth preferably with wire instead wireless to avoid any lags. 2. Normally when Demos of the product or videos within in video conferences comes along with running presentations, presenter uses dual monitors so should test the toggle between the systems with audio & video together. 3. Ensure you have a support staff and platform expert available to manage the sharing, spotlight, mutes, transfers, time checks etc. for seamless live streaming experience. 4. Must keep a backup of the material for the video conference in 2-3 machines to cover any disaster or unforeseen circumstances

What we normally do is ensure bandwidth meets business needs. A simple video / zoom meeting could be handled by broadband and default settings. The more meetings the more capacity or split allocation across the sites. Telepresence use cases will require dedicated links for optimal delivery and precision on latency.

While closing unnecessary applications helps it is also important that collaborative applications are supported so people can create useful artifacts collaboratively in the meeting.

Close your games. Close Facebook. Close X. The only thing that should be open are the tools that you need in the moment. In addition, find better tools. Ones that don’t hog memory. Ones that contribute to collaboration. And please make sure do not disturb is on. You don’t want a public presentation being ruined by a random text from somebody that could be potentially inappropriate.

Close any unnecessary applications or browser tabs that may be using bandwidth. 3. Position yourself closer to the Wi-Fi router or use a Wi-Fi extender. 4. Check your internet speed. 5. If possible, use a high-quality webcam and microphone for better audio and video clarity. 6. Consider using a virtual background to minimize distractions and improve video performance. 7. Test your setup before important meetings to ensure everything is working smoothly. Remember, a reliable network connection is key to a seamless video conferencing experience!

Depends on whether are joining the conference from home office or actual office. Approach varies accordingly. If office, get your IT support to provision optimal bandwidth for you. Check signal strength and proliferation. Your office may be based in blind spots of network. These days mobile apps are available to see signal strength and proliferation. My team has developed such a mobile app. At home, use an indoor repeater to amplify signal strength in your home office room. If you can afford to have a separate wifi connection, do so. This avoids other family members’ binge watching Netflix/ Primevideo or playing video games take the juice out of your video conference calls. When network is poor, don’t assume that problem is at the far end!

Three final comments: Implement robust security measures, such as firewalls, encryption, and authentication protocols, to protect video conferencing data from unauthorized access, interception, or tampering. Use high-quality video conferencing hardware, such as cameras, microphones, and speakers, along with reliable video conferencing software that supports advanced features and optimizations for optimal performance. Regularly monitor network performance metrics, such as bandwidth utilization, latency, and packet loss, and optimize network configurations as needed to address any issues or bottlenecks affecting video conferencing quality.

Test your network, but also test everything. Make sure you know how your system works. How to hook it up correctly. And practice. Time is precious. Ensure that you are valuing the time of others by having everything ready to start. A 10min break at the start while you fiddle with settings will be frustrating and not give audience much confidence in you.

In era when we work a lot remotely, you should consider investing (in case you work frequently from home) to right equipment. For start you need good microphone (quality headset also would do) avoid using laptop microphone if you can, get large screen instead talking only to laptop, invest in good high resolution camera mounted on top of screen, consider desk with movable height (this would allow you to deliver some presentations standing which can boost your posture and confidence). And of course when you have an important meeting close all apps and turn off pop up notifications to minimise disruption during presentations. One more thing - if you want to avoid showing inside of your house - use virtual backgrounds.
