1. An organizations first needs to review its goals, mission & vision, more so the long-term ones. 2. Then look at the all round it's ethics and principles. 3. In comparison with the specific donor principles and goals, try and see where alignment happens. If matching, then look at the grant being offered; what requirements and guidelines are required to win a part or all of it. 4. Internally assess the capacity to manage the grant; financial, technically and in accordance with donor's preferences (including humanitarian principles, reporting, safeguarding, human harassment, in any form, etc,). 5. Align and adopt. .

Ensure your organization has an up to date Strategic Plan (SP). This is crucial because it provides the frame work for achieving the mission, vision and goals

1. Align Grants with Goals: Choose grants that match your mission & organisational goals. 2. Invest in Grant Writing: Train staff and hire experienced writers - it will pay off! 3. Grant Calendar: Track deadlines & opportunities closely so they don't slip by. 4. Relationships: Build & maintain relations with donors (even from years gone by!) 5. Diversify: Combine grants with donations, sponsorships & other earned revenue. 6. Capacity Building: Seek grants that support staff training to boost retention & fuel long-term growth. 7. Collaborate: Team up with mission-aligned groups for stronger proposals. 8. Pivot: When conditions change, communicate with funders and try to get their blessing to pivot from the original plan for maximum impact.

A healthy organization must have a robust, diverse financial portfolio. Meaning, not relying on one funding source or one funder to provide sustainable funding. The top three suggestions for integrating grant funding into your organization's development plan are: 1. Be intentional about the grants you are pursuing. Multi-year grants are ideal for sustainable funding and capacity building. 2. Piggy-back the grant with real-time opportunities for the funder to interact with your organization (just like an annual investor or donor). 3. Develop the grant funder the same as an individual donor or Business funder. Relationship building is key to grant funders, just like donors or corporate investors.

Your mindset should focus on empowering the people you serve, championing the policies that save or enrich people’s lives, and removing barriers to a just society that your organization is determined to eliminate. Raising funds has to be powered by faith in the mission and a deep understanding that without money, no mission succeeds.

I find that writing can be hard; even if eventually rewarding. Grant writing is harder. It requires a team approach. One person can write narratives, some write methodology, and some craft budgets. Here are my tips. 1. Nominate someone as the first draft writer. This person has to okay with imperfect but prolific writing. 2. Nominate an editor who loves taking text and making it better. --> As an aside, remember for roles #1 and #2, both contributions are valid. Celebrate both of them. Never criticize. 3. Find a person who likes doing research. 4. Find a person who is good at or wants to become good at budget writing. Distributing tasks that you can complete in 10-15 minute sprints, makes grant writing seem more doable: for everyone.

Having managed the Competitive Grants Program for innovation in agriculture, technology and marketing, having clear guidelines, eligibility criteria, grant processing steps, grant implementation requirements (for those who make it as grant winners), consistent monitoring and evaluation during the grant implementation, is paramount. In many cases, applicants do not posess all the knowledge and skills to write the proposal, finalize the budget, have clear definition of the scope or even expectations. Therefore specialists come into play, service providers who offer their expertise and work hand in hand with grantee. Needless to say, a solid process makes managing grants, far easier.

Before a nonprofit can begin to apply for grants, they need to do the following: 1) Draft a solid needs/case statement to understand what they are looking for, so they don't apply for grant money that does not align with the needs 2) Review board giving - if the majority of the board is not giving annually, get that in order. Many grant proposals will ask for information about board giving, low board giving will be looked upon poorly. 3) Make sure there is appropriate staffing to a) conduct research to find grants that align with mission, needs, etc., b) apply for the grant, c) manage the grant, and d) follow-up with post-grant reporting requirements Until these are fleshed out, a nonprofit is not ready to apply for grants.

Today, managing grants can be complex and challenging, which is why it’s essential to have a grant management knowledge, skills and/or experience. A better option is to find funders who are interested in your mission and objectives - trying to create projects just for funding leads to a lot of mission creep, and a lack of outcomes that get you closer to your goal. Instead, identify 2-3 priority outcomes and then find funders who are aligned with those goals.

Start by conducting thorough research to identify relevant grants that align with your organization's goals and projects. Once you've found potential grants, assess their eligibility criteria and requirements, tailoring your proposals to meet these specifications. Integrate grant application deadlines into your strategic timeline, allowing sufficient time for preparation, submission, and potential revisions to increase the chances of securing funding.

In my experience it is best to skillfully write your project proposal such that it is in strict alignment with the interests and goals of the funder. If they are seeking to fund a new versus an existing project you propose a new grant-funded project rather than trying to convince them that your existing project should be funded. And yes, you should understand the funders' mission, vision, and focus and make sure your proposed project matches - otherwise keep searching for calls for grant proposals that have a framework in which your project fits. You should the need/problem your project "solves," and state how you will measure success and how you will continue after the grant funds are expended, i.e., fee for service, volunteers, etc.

Research, research, research…. Will help you identify the best grants to apply for, for your organisation so you target your best chance of success. Hopefully saving you time writing applications that will be unsuccessful and Funders processing application that don’t fit their criteria! Win win!

Don't hitch your wagon to the wrong horse. Figure out what your donor cares about — not just on paper but in the real-life, sidewalk level things. If your organization's real goals and mission fit with what that donor cares about (and gives funding for), then you begin some conversations about how the funding can begin. But the money part is way down the road. Do a lot of talking and sniffing around first.

Aligning your projects with funder's interest does not mean that you need to change your project's trajectory. You should never do that! The easy way is to find out funders who align with your project's mission and vision. If you cannot find anyone like that, you need to be convincing enough to energize and direct your target funders to your goal. But, yes at least the niche needs to match. A funder who only funds healthcare project, is not going to fund your education project if they are not searching for new avenues.

When I assess the grant goals I creatively think up ways we can integrate these goals into our strategic plan over the next 1-5 years. However I agree with other contributors that it’s important to find the grants that best align to your organisation first.

I think it is also important to research who else is addressing the need. There is much duplication in the non profit and profit for purpose space. A competitor analysis will reveal any duplication. This may open the door to a multi partner collaboration and approach to funding bodies. Many grant makers like this economical approach as it raises the bar for service delivery.

Often I see NGOs trying to fit their programs as per the funder/donor's thematic focus. That is neither an appropriate nor a sustainable approach. Instead, seek donors which directly align with your mission & vision.That is half the job done, rest is quality proposal development, as per mandated guidelines & submission of requisite due diligence documents, annual reports etc

I use a funding forecast tracker for the countries under my region. These opportunities are categorized as high, medium and low probability forecasts based on factors like historical trends, funding decisions, donor fiscal policy and donor intel. The weightage of each category is 80, 60 and 40 percent of the anticipated funds. It helps to pitch in more proposals in order to reach maximum funding target.

Always have a pipeline in place as well as a calendar to keep you on track. Share what you are doing with your funders; it will demonstrate to them that they have a seat at the table and their opinions are valuable and important.

Start with templates - there are so many (free!) resources available with a little digging and googling. Or, you can start a shared Google doc or an Excel file. The goal is to start simple, track deadlines, and make sure you're on time with all required documents.

Calendars are like road-maps. They're crucial. Without a clear sense of "when," things don't happen. The talk stays just talk, and there's no sense of what steps to take to get ready for the funding, for the use of that funding, and for your measurement of how that funding is doing what you said it will (be able to prove it in verifiable ways). A suggestion, be ready for that calendar to get pushed back. Flexible calendars (not gooshy, but somewhat moveable) are part of your succeess. Rigidity in your calendar can blow it all up.

Building a pipeline begins with some strategic planning on your organization's part. - What funds do you need to achieve your goals - What topics can you be competitive in seeking? For example, if your organization has workforce training experience, how can you showcase your experience to stand out from other applicants? Start making a pipeline by identifying search terms (e.g., workforce training) and grant websites, such as grants.gov. Then search and save potential grants, and set up notifications for what you are interested in. Because many grants are recurring, you can search for inactive grants so you get a broader picture of what may be available.

Maintaining an updated grant and reporting calendar is one of the most critical parts to grant making. If you miss a deadline, you're in serious jeopardy of loosing out on future funding. While you keep an eye out on new opportunities, don't forget to stay focused on the funders you already work with.

The proposal so written should articulate how the money is going work for poor and marginalized. A clear section on Social Return on Investment will be a compelling argument for seeking a grant.

Don't waste words. Know what you need, know why you need it, and know how that funding will bring tangible improvement, taking your organization to the next level. Keep it clear and don't say it more than once. Data and factual evidence are crucial. Don't use adjectives: explain with concrete nouns and active verbs. Read it at least 30 times (including backwards) to catch every error in spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax.

In my experience alignment to funder priorities and (biases) trumps proposal quality. Some poorly written proposals could be funded if they captured priorities. Failure to communicate concisely what you intend to do however will disadvantage an applicant

The main thing I am finding is that Donors don’t always read long pitch proposals. There are key elements that they seek and the best is to address these in 10 slides maximum: 1)Executive summary 2)Vision and Mission 3)The Problem 4)Solution you offer 5)Why support the Charity-what makes you unique and the benefits of supporting/ donating 6)Governance, Tax Benefits, Board of Trustees, Patron 7)Contact details

I have written different types of grants, NIH and other governmental, foundation, and family. While they are all different in their requirements, there are 3 key steps to follow: 1) Pay attention to the requirements and follow them to a T! This is not a time to assume or make a decision. If something is not clear, then reach out and ask. I knew a grantee that lost a $3 million dollar grant because they neglected to submit 2 copies of the proposal. 2) Create a grant checklist for each individual grant, so you can ensure you don't miss anything 3) Make sure you get someone else to read through it and check, re-check for the requirements, look for typos, etc. Finally, it is important not to rush a grant - they take time, so start early.

After identifying the gap you wish to address.. explore solutions you would like to test or implement. Following this understand the type of costs required whilst identify the policy objective the subject is addressing. Only then match funding sources. This will be a natural fit and if you are clear in your objective, clear in listing your activities and target audience , and ensure to provide a good quality link to describe how such effort contributes to funding objectives and include supporting qualitative and quantitative evidence. Do that and you will have a good chance to secure funding.

Writing compelling grants starts with being very clear about your program objectives, goals, outcomes, outputs, and timelines. Without that, it's incredibly hard to write a compelling grant.

Developing a comprehensive proposal is crucial. Oftentimes, transitioning from an internal project/organization perspective to that of the reviewer can cause challenges..

I add do a thorough assessment before you apply to grant from funder. If you are an organisation do you have organisational capacity to run the grant successfully. Capacity assessment helps to measure if you can achieve the objectives and implement projects on time , quality and budget with the affordable resources and expertise. Tray to propose evidence based interventions that are based on real ground needs. Supporting your proposal with statistics and numbers or cases strengthening your proposal.

Managing the grant is a key element to the award. The grantor wants to know how their money is being utilized and of the desired outcomes are being achieved. I will argue, even if they do not require it, it is good stewardship to provide such report outs. Not only is it good practice and appreciated (if not required) by the funder, but it also provides an opportunity for the nonprofit to assess the success and learn from potential mistakes, poorer than expected outcomes, as well as from the successes. If a nonprofit does not comply with required mid-and/or post-grant reporting, they will be less likely to be awarded grants from the funder in the future.

It has been my experience to consider the Foundation /Grantor as a major donor, establishing a relationship that has depth beyond the application process. For example, building a relationship with the Foundation staff, Board members and/or decision making entities will help you with trust and establishing inroads into better understanding the application process and reporting expectations. In addition, a stewardship calendar with ongoing communication beyond required reports will further deepen the relationship.

There is *nothing* worse than winning a grant and having to turn it down because your organization does not have the capacity to manage funds. Before applying a grant, make sure your organization has the capacity to handle and stewards grants. Building a successful record of managing grants makes your organization more competitive down the road.

Make sure you have someone (or a few people) following that money as it comes in. Don't let it just fall in the big pot of soup. Follow the dollars — because auditors from your donor will — to make sure they get spent on what you said you needed. If you asked for too little, make note of that (it could help you make the case for more money). If you asked for more than you need, note that too. And follow up with the donor about moving funding to areas of your organization that need help. Take the kinds of notes (and photos and maybe video) to verify how that funding was put to good use. It helps you with this donor and your next grant seeking pursuit.

It's not just about managing the grant, its about managing the donors. Building & managing strong donor relationships via regular communication (verbal/written) is key to effective grant management. Also, as we report back every month or quarter, it is important to document the success/impact stories as well as the challenges, this enables the donor to have a realistic & contextual understanding of the program. It also gives the NGO room to factor in any programmatic changes needed to reach the desired outcomes.

Strengthen your partnership with the funder. Share your agency's information, annual reports, highlights, etc. Schedule check ins with the funder and show impacts of their investment!

Stewarding grants can be as simple or complicated as you make it, but the key is consistency. Consistent communication, updates, and responses build trust with the funder and allow you the opportunity to expand the relationship in the future.

Mantaining regular communication and providing updates to the funder are keys to long-term partnership and mutual satisfaction from the project.

In my experience I've found that communication with your donors, individual, corporate and private foundations is critical in building your relationship. Ensure you are complying with the grant guidelines and educate other staff on the importance of fulfilling these requirements. Providing detailed reports that also show the impact being made goes a long way towards future funding.

I’m certain most funders would like to know what impact the funded program had on people in a community/ priority group. data and some analysis presented in a neat report is always welcome. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just needs to supported by ethically obtained data and findings simply explained in relation to the agreed social outcomes.

There are some great, affordable grant writing courses and many associations dedicated to helping fundraising professionals build the necessary skills to excel in their careers. Consider local chapters of Associations, attend events, talk to other professionals, and practice your skills often.

One thing I have found helpful is communicating with the grantor well ahead of the deadline. Funders are always willing to help. Paying attention to guidelines, words/ characters and budget limits right from the start is always a good practice.

Make life easier for yourself by preparing a grant application template that includes answers to all the most frequently asked questions in a typical grant application. Take time to make these as concise and powerful as possible. This will save you time if you are planning to ask several potential funders to support a particular initiative.

Grant writing is an art and a skill. You learn from your mistakes. Employers should recognize the importance of allowing employees to dedicate time to prepare successful proposals that ultimately will be funded and that it is not a "factory" to get out as many proposals as possible. All fundraising is about relationship building and telling stories.

I can’t encourage y’all enough to take professional development and continued education opportunities seriously. In fact, I would build these into your funding strategy and urge you to consider approaching a funder who would help your organization either identify relevant training opportunities or even help you to afford them.

I do want to remind those applying for grants of the importance of story telling as a tool to engage readers. Before you answer all the requirements of the grant application make sure you have one paragraph with a powerful story. To give you some context: best selling author Yuval Hariri sold 21 million copies of Sapiens. This is the only anthropology book to ever sell 21million copies! Not only he sold 21 million copies but there was no new research in this book. I will repeat this: There was nothing new about the findings in his books. So how did he sell 21 million copies? What was novel are the stories he told in the book so he was able to reach to an audience that never bought an anthropology book before (including myself!)

1. Be an integral part of your organization’s strategic planning process. 2. Align development goals with organization strategic plan goals and strategies. 3. Create a multidimensional development plan that relies on multiple sources of funding. 4. Regularly assess progress, including updated identification of specific development plan results. 5. Adjust the development plan on an ongoing basis to correlate with changing environmental and organization needs consistent with the most current organization strategic plan.

It is important to be focused on what you want to achieve. A clear and concise application stands out often from the first paragraph. Similarly when the impact change target is unclear, that is also visible. Alignment to the Funders’ priorities is important but it can also be read in reverse. Don’t apply if their priority is not your priority.

Continued stewardship is critical after the grant is awarded. Keep the grantor engaged and informed. They are investing in you and your vision, and want to see the organization succeed.

A good rule of thumb for getting started is to have these documents on hand. Many will be required by various funders, others will be effective tools for you as you write: -Federal ID letter of determination -Articles of Incorporation -990 -Most recent audit -Organization budget -Board roster with affiliations -Bylaws -SAM registry and EIU # -Staff resumes -Organization’s history -Summaries of programs and services you provide -Project budget(s) -Strategic plan / agency goals -Mission -Outcome measurement plan (data compilation plan) -Demographics: staff, clientele, community Happy writing! It is desirable to look for grant opportunities, that relate to Vision, Mission and activities of organisation. However, in practice, it becomes more important to first understand grant opportunities; and themes/locations such opportunities cover; And apply for such opportunities.

I agree with the above, but as a grant application organization it is critical to equally address the self sustainability aspect of the organization post receiving the grant. Every organization needs to show the path to self sustainability in their development plans so as to address the dependency issue. One simple way to address this is through local resource mobilization solutions where one can seek the input of recipients, beneficiaries or other stakeholders who can come in and strengthen the organization to a level where grant funding will reduce in due time. With a self sustainability plan, this increases the chances of winning grants based in solutions shared.

Consider context and kind of risks that may encounter the implementation and what realistic measures to mitigate them. Realistic design show how professional the applicant to donors. Avoid copy paste from other proposals but make efforts to propose activities that touches the needs to serve the objectives and creat sustainable impact as possible at the long run. Start with your eye on the outcomes and put a realistic schedule for each activity.

Sustainability after the grant period can make or break an application. Before beginning an application, consider and plan how the program or project to be potentially funded will continue after the grant period. No funder wants to shower money on a program that ends after the grant goes away. Alternatively, no funder wants (typically) to be the program's annual funder. Organizations seeking funding for their ideas should have a concrete plan on how to continue them after the grant period. Additionally, funders like to see support from other funders of a project (if available), which adds to a program's viability and permanence.

It's rightly said - LEAD by EXAMPLE. Not in the literal sense here but unless you don't have an exciting story to tell, there won't be takers for your proposal. Stories leave an impression - which helps improve your chances above others.
