in my experience the climax of any story should fulfill the promises made throughout and it should also include a surprise or unexpected twist. This will maintain the reader's interest and leave them satisfied with the resolution.Because the climax is an opportunity to demonstrate how the protagonist has grown and changed throughout the story.Such narrative also show how they have overcome their flaws and become a stronger, more developed character.

Ensure that the emotional payoff aligns with the promises and expectations established earlier in the narrative.Intensification of obstacles and believable difficulties the character encounters, should contribute to the potential consequences of loss and failure especially that failure is easily believable.

Consider your theme. It's easy to focus on plot, resolving loose ends, but for great impact remind the audience of your story's theme and demonstrate that it's true. For example, Shawshank Redemption is about the power of hope ('fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free'). It's referred to throughout. Andy and Red disagree on the benefit or cost of having hope. In the final scene, when Red takes his bus into freedom we hear him say, 'I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.' The impact (and audience tears) are because we've (subtly) been reminded throughout that survival requires hope. Red had lost hope, now he has hope, which serves his arc and proves the theme.
