How can you balance jargon and simplicity on your resume?

Using industry-specific jargon can actually add credibility to your candidacy... it demonstrates that you "speak the language"... so to speak. If, however, you are changing fields, you may want to use discretion as to the extent that you use this jargon and abbreviations. For example... in the mortgage industry 𝐋𝐨𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬 are universally referred to as "𝐋𝐎's"... in call centers, the time on a call is universally referred to act AHT or ACT (average handling time and average call time, respectively). But these terms may not resonate with a hiring manager at a Hospotal or Law Firm. So, use discretion with the industry-specific jargon you use... it can be an asset, but it can also be a detriment.

Create a checklist of technical terms or industry-specific jargon relevant to your field. Refer to this checklist while writing your resume to ensure you don't overuse jargon. Prioritize technical terms and industry phrases that show you're a great fit for the role. The rest need not be mentioned if you start to notice that in one sentence you already have over two words you need to explain. For example, I have a client in Tech who mixed up jargon from different areas of tech. I advised to him to use that space to showcase soft skills.

To strike the right balance, ensure that your use of jargon is accompanied by clear context or explanations. However, keep your explanations concise and to the point. When the jargon appears often in the job description, no need to over-explain. 1. Whenever you introduce a technical term or jargon, follow it with a brief explanation. Example: "Proficient in SQL, a database management system used for data retrieval and analysis." 2. Whenever possible, link the use of jargon to specific achievements or outcomes. This not only clarifies the term but also demonstrates its relevance and impact. Example: "Utilized TensorFlow, an open-source machine learning framework, to develop a predictive model that improved customer retention by 15%."

This is why I LOVE resume writing. Many times I am translating complex jargon and experience into simply and compelling language understood by several gatekeepers. Simplifying your language is essential because it ensures broader readability and understanding among diverse audiences, including non-specialist recruiters and hiring managers. Overly complex jargon can alienate individuals who may not be intimately familiar with your field. By simplifying your language, you make your qualifications more accessible and demonstrate effective communication skills.

The truth is, even industry veterans who know every industry keyword still appreciates simple language. So, set a ratio for jargon-to-plain language in your resume. For example, aim for a 70-30 ratio, with 70% of your resume in plain language and 30% in industry-specific terms.

Failing to proofread or edit your resume can lead to common errors such as typos, grammatical mistakes, and inconsistencies, which can significantly diminish your professional image and hinder your job prospects. Proofreading and editing jargon on a resume is essential to ensure accuracy and clarity, preventing any potential misunderstandings or misinterpretations by recruiters and employers.

The job description should be your guiding light, especially when it comes to determining the density of jargon. If the job description (JD) you're applying to is full of technical terms and industry-specific jargon, consider this your permission slip to incorporate such language judiciously.
