Working with farmers I have noted that data analysis can help to determine the potential season for a given pest presence. In addition, it is vital in determining pest crop associations for example which crop types are associated with which pests. Some weeds, off season crops and/ or cover crops act as hosts for pests. The use of sensors/monitors data on different pests can be collected and used for planning.

As climate continues to warm in Alaska, pests will become a greater concern. Many insects will migrate north and not be killed off in the once cold dry climate. Using data to measure heat units in real time will be helpful to predict the development of instar development. Aphids are an example. I suspect that in the decades to come humans will see greater variation and more problems controlling insects and the already abundant plant pathology challenges Alaskan farmers face. Our cold climate is changing rapidly. In the last 50 years I have witnessed great change. Using data from remote sensing and private weather stations should be used to predict and forecast what will happen so growers and consumers understand the “why”.
