One needs to be very good at basics of networking, security, containerization, infra etc. One needs to be good in these basics. Then there are certain differentiators between various CSPs like Big Data for GCP, DevOps for Azure etc. One needs to be aware and conversant about those. I run a Payment platform as a Service. Basically a SaaS model running on top of PaaS from AWS. There is no way we could have achieved the scale of base cost per user per month using legacy or even data center hosted equipment. The level of control, speed of deployment and scale afforded to us from PaaS is incredible. We can carry out new software rollouts in under 10 minutes across multiple server instances with no downtime for customers. I simply couldn't imagine the sheer cost to achieve the same on prem or even as a data center hosted model. Centralisation is a powerful thing.

Always built with the assumption that you will be hacked and when you are what they steal should be well encrypted so it is useless to the hacker. Data encryption at rest and in transit are key. Never keep sensitive data you don't need to have it just brings more security and compliance cost and overhead. Segment resources where you can so data transmission is kept to managed routes, ports, IP addresses and credentials. Never hardcode credentials in code. Use environment variables and consum credentials at the point of use. These all help mitigate against damage if a breach occurs.

From a client standpoint of outsourcing any scope of work, the key aspects are the contractual agreements covering terms and conditions of client including specific requirements and objectives of any project assignment. This also is mutually agreed and signed. The cyber security process and technical controls will be a mandate to enforce client confidentiality, data governance and also geo specific regulatory compliance requirements. All of this has to be clearly understood and accordingly the specific technical tools can be applied. Veeam, Cohesity and others are doing the right things very quickly to help protect all sorts of workloads on them from cyberattacks, malawares, ransomaware attacks which is a good homecoming in IT by such vendors. Veeam acquiring coveware is one such business outcome. Expect lot of acquisitions in cybersecurity in Data Protection Space with growing data sets and LLMs as these self-service stacks of the worlds get deployed with Nvidia GPUs to support Hybrid workloads.
