Furthermore, it means you get in-practice experience and this is the most valuable way to learn in film. Different people have their own processes and specialisms and just being in conversation with these individuals is a sure-fire way to learn quickly.

If you start volunteering for different roles on set... you won't last very long, unless it's a "favour" on a no budget production. I have nothing against "favours" but you won't earn from them. Film tends to be very structured and potential crew members apply for roles that they've studied or worked at. There are routines and tasks that each dept observes. This is a form of knowledge, charging batteries, downloading data, if you adapt quickly, you're halfway there. If you have to charge camera batteries, find out what all the printed jargon means on the battery. Check how long it takes to charge etc. Show an interest. There will be plenty of YouTube videos to learn from. You may think you have a mundane role, until something goes wrong!
