People really love talking about themselves and especially when it is a prompted question. Prompted questions give people an opportunity to be in a safe space. Be available to really keep the discussion going and acknowledge the sharing.

When using open-ended questions it prompts your team members to think more in depth on the question that is asked of them. Only answering with a yes or no requires more questions to be asked which will only give you half of the information you are seeking. I love using open-ended questions because it allows my team to use critical thinking skills that requires their input instead of waiting for answers from me as the leader.

Active listening…. BIG PAUSE, acknowledge you are paying attention to what is being said, make eye contact, great non-verbal communication which states more of active listening, and hear to understand not respond at first. Sounds simple but most times we feel we already have the answer so we miss the truth depth of the conversation/answer because we want to seem smart or have a solution when exactly there is not a problem. Active listening is truly about letting go of the mic, and allowing someone else to have the stage.

Follow-up questions show that you're not only listening but also interested in digging deeper into the subject. These questions can clarify points that may be ambiguous and encourage further discussion on important topics. Often times follow up questions can be used to help better articulate what is happening in your thoughts but haven’t fully processed how to respond.
