In my experience designing time to build connection amongst participants at the start of a facilitated process can help to lay a foundation of empathy throughout the rest of the session. For example, starting with a simple connection activity like "What's in a name", where participants share a story related to their name in breakouts can help to build an awareness and appreciation of the diversity of experiences in a group.

Establishing clear group norms is essential for promoting diversity and inclusivity. These norms should be collaboratively created to ensure everyone’s input is valued. As a facilitator, guide the group in setting expectations for behavior, communication, and decision-making processes that respect and include all members. Norms might include using inclusive language, sharing speaking time equitably, and being open to different opinions. Reinforce these norms regularly and address any breaches promptly to maintain a respectful and inclusive group dynamic.

3 Encourage Voices

In any group, some members may be less inclined to speak up due to various reasons, such as cultural background or personality type. It's your role to encourage these quieter voices to share their thoughts. Create opportunities for everyone to contribute, perhaps by using structured turn-taking or breaking into smaller discussion groups. Acknowledge and validate contributions from all members, which can build confidence and promote a more balanced exchange of ideas.

Here are a few things I've found helpful to encourage voices in virtual meetings: 1) Extending a special invitation to those participants who may not naturally be comfortable sharing their ideas in a group or with strangers. 2) Giving participants options, for example, to contribute in the chat or verbally. 3) Pausing to give people who haven't contributed an opportunity to come forward (sometimes they just need a few extra moments to collect their thoughts). I am also clear that as the facilitator, it's my responsibility to balance voices and create the conditions where people feel motivated and confident to engage.

4 Address Bias

Unconscious biases can be a significant barrier to diversity and inclusivity in groups. As a facilitator, you must be aware of your own biases and work actively to mitigate them. Provide training or resources to help group members recognize and address their biases. During discussions, be vigilant for bias in language or behavior, and intervene when necessary. Participants in these types of discussions assume that the success means that we leave the discussion thinking the same and agreeing with each other. This is why many interventions are seen as failures. The objective is not to leave all thinking the same or all in agreement- the objective is to expand your own thinking, put yourselves in someone’s shoes to be able to see their point of view and perhaps question some of your own beliefs.
