Actually I disagree with this statement. As a VC, your value is not your team value but your access / capability to find great teams to invest into alongside your co-investors and limited partners. This is only once we managed to bring an investment opportunity to the table with a team that was so talented in an industry that was so rare, that we got a sit to the table and got more investors to be willing to invest in our fund. For us, the deal was a EV battery recycling company, then this led us to attract larger LPs to invest in an even rarer round table which typically doesn’t invite small VCs like us. But by negotiating interesting terms with the startup, we got even more favor from our LPs and closed our first fund.

4 years ago I went to a Deeptech conference in Paris and had a coffee during the break. Someone asked me for a lighter for a cigarette. We chatted and connected on Linkedin. A few months later he offered me an allocation to invest in his company, he was the CTO of a fast-growing climate tech company in Boston. A year later, his company made it to the New York Times after raising $189m to decarbonize the cement industry. To me, a VC with a very cool office packed with staff is not really someone I would trust to give my money to as an LP. To me, a VC is crawling the internet, meetups, conferences, roads, etc to find that one gem. No time to stay at the office. No time to talk to staff: talk to as many bankable founders as possible.

Building relationships is the key because we are doing business with people not companies or allocators. Doing research and developing a familiarity with the allocators goals is the next level. Do they even align with your fund, mission, thesis, risk and more.

Building relationship that are based on trust and respect for long-term is the biggest success. Of course you need to deliver, but even if you have low moments, people will support you because they trust in you. Also be helpful. Bring value before asking for money. And also a lot of investors can choose with whom they want to invest. Be friends, be interesting and a nice person to have around.

Too many won't event respond unless part of their network. This does disservice to LPs and the VC firm

LPs investments criteria varies. That being said, you pitch should offer solid data about your performances (ideally cash given back to your previous investors). You should also be clear on your investments thesis and also your exit strategy. Of courses, your sector expositions and missions are importants. But your investors are in for a high return as they know it is a high risk low liquidity investment.

I like to say to VCs that karma is a pitch, because it's so easy to sit there and judge a founder's pitch but you deserve to know how hard it is to pitch. You should be able to convey the market opportunity, where you think the multi-billion dollar exits are gonna come from (especially if your fund is attributed to historically significant outcomes try to tie that into your story). I like to tell the story in reverse chronological order talking about recent investments into new portfolio companies and what the rationale was. I try to pick relevant portfolio companies depending who I'm talking to and what they might be interested in to try to highlight alignment of investment thesis. Investment thesis is the explanation of investor behavior.

Now imagine someone throwing 8 tennis balls at same time -Slowly provide more information -Most import is reduce the exec. summary to one page that LP can easily understand This will make it interesting to arrange meetings with clear potential investors.

The most important thing for a successful fundraising is previous track records and success stories. Any professional investors will judge your work and your firm based on your previous experiences. plans, IPS, Prospectus, or any document will not convince investors to invest only based on some papers and this situation makes it hard for first-time fund managers, 90% of the time first-time managers can not start their funds since they can't raise their money.

Positive feedback from those who have directly benefited from your investments can serve as powerful third-party validation of your capabilities. In the managing money world, nothing bring in more money than showing you can multiple their money...... Bernie Madoff and Charles #Ponzi employed the same technique. But in their case, the record of multiplying other people's money is a fiction that they embellished over a long period, with confidence! The rest of investment profession have to generate actual returns for their clients. One highly sophisticated sovereign wealth fund #SWF advised they will skip the inaugural funds. Will invest in subsequent funds as it means the managers have survived. Thus the chicken or egg question for the first-time managers. They should have track records but likely while working for other fund managers that have been successful.

Not always the case. There are many Tier 1 funds that have poor track records. LPs tend to gravitate to the Tier 1 fund managers. Emerging managers need to show a track record without having one. I once was pitching a cleantech fund to LP before the cleantech market took off. The LP said we want 10 year track record. I said, "Good. Wait 10 years". The LP said if we do that we miss the hockey stick returns. A track record is important but not always the most convincing.

It doesn't have to sit with a high-risk, private, low-liquid, and comparatively small asset class like VC. So there's nothing faster than lack of transparency that could turn an investor off. In addition to make large returns, one of the bigger reasons for investing in VC is to be a part of the innovation, creation, and life-giving journey. Transparently sharing more about your VC journey with your investors will give them more joy.

My early experiences with fundraising were challenging but with experience I finessed my approach. First, I shifted my focus from just talking about opportunities to highlighting outcomes. Investors are interested in your ability to pick winners, so I made sure to showcase past successful investments and the clear process behind those successes. Second, I worked on building genuine relationships. Instead of just name-dropping, I took the time to understand each investor's goals and demonstrated how our fund aligned with them. Finally, I aimed to project confidence without crossing into arrogance. I showed passion for my investment thesis while also acknowledging the inherent risks and explaining my plan to navigate them.

I think the truth is that there are three ways to raise money successfully as a VC (outside of starting with a lot of money to begin with!): (1) Strong performance, INCLUDING these days "DPI" or paying your investors back actual money in your prior funds or SPVs. (2) Being an emerging manager with a really differentiated Right-to-Win. (3) Having LPs who are willing to re-up with you even if your performance is unrealized. In all matters, transparency, perseverance, and clarity of purpose are key, along with leveraging an amazing network.

The critical appalling comment raised during a relatively cold call visit during a first time fund raising is “this is your first time fund raising”. As hurt as this comment it gets, think about it: would you trust 1M dollars to someone you aren’t familiar with or to someone whom you hardly know apart from being recommended by an esteemed friend? Doesn’t matter how well you pitch, if we don’t know each other well (no presence of trust and trust takes time to build) and if the industries or mandates are not the same as our industry or interest, then find other ways that you find pleasure doing it and more meaningful.
