I believe that more than taking a course in financial management or using financial software, it is critical to monitor cash flow and balance it with the expense sheet. Commonsense financial management in a business just requires us to balance income with expenses, plan for unexpected contingencies, and budget for growth—all with a 3-month horizon. If the business size is small, you can do it yourself with a pen, bank statement and plain sheet in front of you. If the business is mid- to large-sized, let your accountant do this exercise for you on Excel on a daily basis, and two of you sit together—in person or virtual—on it for 5 minutes.
