In a previous role, a remote team member was missing deadlines, impacting the team’s performance. I addressed it directly with a one-on-one conversation to uncover the root cause and found they were struggling with time management due to unclear priorities. Together, we created a structured plan with manageable milestones and clear deadlines. Weekly check-ins helped track progress and address challenges, while I provided mentorship on prioritization techniques. Over time, their performance improved significantly, and the team regained momentum. This taught me the value of clear communication, empathy, and providing practical solutions to help team members succeed.

When a remote team member misses deadlines, start with empathy and understanding. Schedule a quick one-on-one chat to ask how they’re doing and if anything is making work harder for them. Sometimes it’s about clarity, workload, or unexpected challenges. Together, revisit priorities, set clear expectations, and offer any support they might need, whether it’s tools, resources, or better communication. Follow up with regular check-ins to stay aligned, but keep the tone collaborative, not critical. The goal is to build trust and help them succeed, not just meet deadlines.

If a remote team member keeps missing deadlines, talk to them first to find out why. Offer help if needed. Then, set easy-to-reach goals and have regular follow-ups to make sure they stay on track. Other things to be considered: 1- Use project management tools e.g. Asana 2- Review their tasks to ensure the deadlines are realistic and align with their capacity. 3- For remote teams, time zone differences or lack of overlap can cause delays. Adjust schedules if needed for better coordination. 4- If deadlines are consistently missed despite all efforts, evaluate if the person is suited for their current role or needs a shift in responsibilities.
