I have never had long term issues with chronically late colleagues or direct reports. I think the reason is that I prioritize accomplishing goals and don’t sweat the small stuff. If there is a mutual understanding that we all are working towards the same goal, we assume positive intent, practice empathy, fix problems instead of blame, and commit to doing our best work, we win together. Worrying about things that aren’t really that important is a distraction.

As a leader I strongly believe that one need to have a good EQ to understand the reasons. I have usually observed that the most talented and intellectually hyperactive people carries a laid back approach. They are far more practical and analytically pretty sound on the subject. They need to be addressed from a different domain and utilise their skills aptly. There is no point in delegating tasks and finding faults in the teammates. Rather we need to integrate the team and deliver in a profound manner.

I understand that these people are the people who are continuously drafting your future organization goals. They are actually the most punctual lot as they are not working as per Indian standard time but as per American standard time, their man hours, are actually not in your portfolio but in the portfolio of the leaders abroad. They are actually only sleep in may be 3 to 4 hours a day which stands unnoticed by may the architects of the organization they are working with. Once they have achieved their goals you will be surprised to see their achievements because they will be rewarded after the us leaders achieve their result staying low key in the Indian organization abroad. It's just a matter of perspective.

The best way to change an employee's bad habits is by rewarding good behaving employees. In this case, punctuality could be used as a yard stick in earning appraisal points, or even granting paid holiday breaks. The second way is by setting an example. A leader that is always early and strict would definitely make late comers to stand on their toes.
