Many safety professionals focus almost entirely on developing their knowledge of regulations and hazards, when they might be better served and more effective if they spent some of that time working on their public speaking skills. Remember that it doesn't matter what we know, because we aren't the people exposed to the dangers. What really matters is our ability, whether by text or verbally, to put that information into the heads of the people who need it - in a form that they can process, retain, and incorporate. Good communications skills should be considered the prime requisite for any safety professional. It's not easy - fear of public speaking is the #1 most common phobia - but it's a skillset that most of us can and should improve.
