Sometimes simplicity beats anything, and I think interview is one of those times. Instead of spending time on thinking how to stand out from the crowd with "unique presentation / portfolio", I would suggest spending this time and trying to understand what the company is looking for and prepping to explain how you experiences match those needs. If you have a clear picture what they need, you have much better chance to convey how YOU are the best candidate. I have seen it many times, folks would do outstanding things, but at the debrif it all comes down to what "we need" and what "they bring as skills" and those extra things come only as "it was nice, but let's choose the candidate who gave the best answers".

In my opinion, as someone that has helped position thousands of people for job interviews, the best way of impressing an interviewer requires a blend of preparation, uniqueness, and genuine interaction. Being creative in your approach means finding authentic ways to showcase your skills, your understanding of the company, and how you stand out as a candidate. Remember, the goal is to be memorable for your potential and fit for the role, not just for the sake of creativity.

You can start by researching the company to find out anything unique about it that may align with your interest. For example, a philanthropy that the institution contributes to that you might be passionate about. Be sure to dress to impress and prepare questions that will make the employer realize that you are genuinely interested in the job. We are very visual. I know for sure that filming a video and sending to the interviewer before the interviewer makes huge impact. You don't have to spend anything on equipment, today's smart phones are great. Prepare a script, practice practice and practice. Have the shoot your are comfortable with evaluated by a trusted friend or colleague. Once approved press send. Keep it short, powerful, seductive and authentic. After the interview keep the momentum going with another video following up on why your are the perfect candidate and the value you will bring on your appointment.

A job seeker with three advanced degrees asked me, "Why am I getting to the final interview stages and never getting the offer. I have the exact technical skills." This made me think that they may have been ignoring other aspects of the interview such as showing that they are a good fit for the company culture and that they really want to work at that specific company. A great way to show an employer that you are a good fit is to ask smart questions that show you're conscious of fitting in with the team and culture, and you realize the role is more than just a collection of skills. A great question to ask in this regard is "Can you tell me about a previous candidate you hired who did a great job fitting in with the team and culture?"

The single best way to impress your interviewers is to be prepared with questions showing you have done your homework beyond the cursory read the job description and “about us” page. Look at press releases going back 6-12 months. Read financials - and financial analyses by third parties. Run an internet search to find out if they have filed patents or had any legal issues. Read about their BoD, what ways they support the community, whether their leaders speak at conferences. Look at job postings to understand what they are hiring for.

In the book ‘Power Questions’. (Sobel & Panas) they talk about the power of indirect questions. Towards the end of the interview, ask a question that shows how you understand the current competitive climate and potential challenges that might be impacting their business. This shows: ✅ you’ve done your research ✅ you can connect the dots at a strategic level ✅ you understand some of the challenges already going on in the hiring manger’s world at the moment. ✅ shows how invested you are to work there beyond just a pay check ✅ leaves a great lasting impression on the hiring manager

Always have several questions prepared. Often, the interviewer will end up answering some of your questions during the interview so you want to have plenty of questions ready.

In my experience, I’ve been really impressed with interviewees that ask about culture or development. Questions like, “ how does professional development play a part in the overall vision of the company” or “ what type of characteristics would a person need to have to succeed in this role?”, are a great way to engage the interviewer and figure out if the company is right for you. The interview is a two way street even though it doesn’t feel like it all the time.

Asking insightful questions during an interview gives you a chance to steer the conversation and learn more about the company. Treat the interview as a dialogue where you can assess if the employers are a good fit for you. Ask questions that genuinely matter to you, rather than trying to impress. Additionally, ensure your questions are backed by research you've done beforehand. For example, instead of a generic questions about growth prospects, mention specific findings from your research and ask tailored questions related to your interests. This approach demonstrates your level of preparation and ensures you ask questions aligned with your priorities.

An interview is a two way street and candidates should treat it as such. I recommend researching the company values, mission statement and goals. Discussing how those goals/ values align with yours, how you can help achieve those goals showcasing your previous experience and asking the interviewer which value aligns best with their personal goals. Highlighting the research you’ve found on their 5 year strategic plan etc, and how you can support the business in achieving those goals.

This is my second vote. If you don't have smart questions in the interview, it shows you haven't prepared yourself well enough. I remember one time asking a question in an interview in which I was not prepared. The response was, "all that can be found on our website." OUCH!!! How do you say you are not prepared for the interview without saying you are not prepared? That was it! Good questions consist of questions about the company, that can't be answered with a simple perusal of their website. Questions about the job and the culture of the company. Questions about their ideals and expectations, and questions about any hesitations they have about you. All of these show you are interested and prepared yourself for the interview.

This interview goes two ways. Asking smart questions definitely shows to the interviewer that you have done your homework, and you've given this role some authentic reflection. As well, this is your opportunity to ask the questions that you really want answers to... What are the challenges of the role? What was one of the biggest opportunities you found for your most recent hires? What is one piece of advice that you'd give to your new hires? What is one key to success that you have seen in some of your recent hires? Based on all of the answers I've provided you, are there any areas of concern that you'd like to revisit with me? If so, I'd love the opportunity to put your mind at ease.

The interview is as much about you vetting the company as it is about them vetting you. Don't let the opportunity to ask smart questions slip by, as it could help you decide if the position is a good fit for you, and in turn impress the interviewers.

Once I was asked "Do you know XYZ technology?" I replied, "I don't know yet." The interviewer said, "I like how you said yet. If you join my company, I will teach you!" Needless to say, we ended up working together!

Honestly I don’t agree with this! If you’re in a job interview it’s very inappropriate to give a gift to the recruiter or interviewer! A person is recruited only if he has the right skills and knowledge for the job not because he offered a gift to the recruiter 😂😂😂

This may be appropriate in some cultures, but do not do send a gift in the United States or Canada. Instead, send a thoughtful thank you note (email or hand-written) to each person in the interview process. Use this format: 1) Thank them for their time and let them know why you enjoyed the conversation 2) reflect on something you learned in the discussion. If sending an email, include links to an article or two that goes deeper into the subject. This shows you listened and have a growth mindset to continue learning. 3) Offer to provide any more information or answer questions if they need it. 4) Tell them you look forward to crossing paths or speaking again in the future. The note doesn’t need to be long, just genuine and clear.

I would advise against sending a gift. In fact some people may not legally be able to accept a gift. Furthermore, it can come across as though you are trying too hard. Instead, send a tailored thank you note that mentions something you talked about in the interview. Doing so will help jog their memory about parts of your interview and show them you took the time to send them a personal thank you note versus the same one to the last 5 please you interviewed.

Wear a fully handmade cosplay of the interviewer wearing the company brand colors. You’ll truly stand out and get across the message that you don’t care about your personal identity, only being an employee.

A hand written and personalized note, yes, a gift, no. I have done this in the past, months after being hires I noticed one of the interviewers had the note hung in their work station. While a follow up email is nice, a hand written note touches deeper with most. It also gives you another chance to have you on their mind days later.

In the UK Construction industry some manager expect a cash gift for getting you a job. Corrupt to the core, all full of tax dodging.

Trying to impress is a paradox. The harder you try, the less you will. If you want to represent yourself well... Be prepared. 1. Start by understanding your value, then research, research, research. Identify how and where you're a solution for the organization (and more importantly, the person) you are interviewing with. 2. Don't get hung up preparing for every possible interview question. Best advice, "treat interviews like a coffee chat." From my numerous experiences in capital markets recruitment, and from supporting many students, you'll find that the less nervous and robotic you are, the better impression you make on the interviewer. So don't forget, be yourself and speak normally. Don't start pitching yourself; that's when you sound like a mobile service representative.

Impress your interviewer with the quality and relevance of your stories, not with gimmicks please. Interviewers want to know what you can do for them. Demonstrate your value for the job by researching the company, listening (really listening) to the people with whom you are speaking, and using that information to help you formulate your interview responses. SMART stories, those that are relevant to the NEW job, demonstrate your value for the new job so much better than anything else.

Read the job description! It sounds basic but it's true – so many candidates don't read the job description. Job descriptions aren't always the most well-written documents, but they do hold clues about what to highlight in your resume, portfolio, etc. Also, job descriptions often contain criteria that are deal breakers for an employer, such as location, visa requirements, etc. So if you didn't get an interview after applying for a role, go back and read the job description to see if there were any deal breaker criteria you didn't meet and/or wasn't clearly communicated on your resume etc.

Prepare for an interview and be ready to answer with examples of relevant cases. If you over-try to impress you might miss clues of why not to choose this organisation for you to work, or you might sound 'too good to be true'. In any case, being authentic is key in securing you a succesful interview for a role you are actually fit or you have great potential.

There are instances when there are upcoming plans on company websites and you are able to contribute your perspective to those plans in the interviews. This shows proactivity and an alignment with the company’s goals.

Show them that you've done your homework, that you know already the company, the people, the products and can quickly start the role and achieve success. Get insights during your preparation, share these insights during the interview and ask questions in terms of "we" and make yourself already part of the team. Tell them, “As part of my preparation for this interview I… [and explain how you went above and beyond]. Did you watch the most recent interviews from the executives? Analyzed their current social media strategy compared with thier competitors? Listen to earnings calls? You can say this as part of the end of your answer to the question “tell me about yourself.” OR after they ask you to take a seat, say, “Thank you. I’m excited for this interview. As part of my preparation I… [and explain how you went above and beyond], and I would love to hear your thoughts on my findings during our conversation.”

The biggest piece of advice that I give students is to use examples in their interviews. It's not enough to say, for example, that you are a good leader. You need to follow that with an example of a time that you used your leadership skills in a successfull way. Otherwise, everyone ends up sounding the same. Positive examples are what makes a candidate stand out.
