You're introducing safety protocols to new employees. How can you ensure they understand the importance?

Try to have a good connection with the employees, build up their confidence towards you first. This way, they tend to agree with what you trying to provide to them. Lay down a little the vibe during the classroom or briefing. A tense listener might not be a good listener at all. Proceed to explain that all the items introduce were for their own safety. Explain how, why, and what to them and try to relate them all back to themselves. At the end of the day, to produce a safe space for work, all hands need to be onboard :)

Los protocolos de seguridad cada día debe ser robustecidos y revisados diariamente, desde lo absurdo que se puede convertir en incidencia hasta un fatal evento. One thing I have found helpful is to explain the why's, when they understand the why's, they are more apt to be willing to follow protocols without being told to or asked to.

The best way to help new employees understand the company's safety protocols is to provide detailed presentations and virtual demonstrations on each piece of safety equipment. The company's safety officer must ensure this is incorporated into the orientation program.

For new employees in quality manufacturing, understanding safety protocols is crucial for their roles. By walking them through daily tasks, it's important to highlight how safety measures are integrated into their work. Emphasizing that these protocols protect them and ensure smooth operations helps them see the direct connection between safety and their responsibilities. When they recognize how adherence to safety impacts both their well-being and the overall efficiency of manufacturing processes, it fosters a personal commitment to uphold these standards.

Storytelling does wonders... Especially by the people who have gone through that particular event. A person with a broken arm or an amputated body part can influence the audience like no other. In EHS, its all about learning from all those who have gone through that misery.... It's a momemt for all of us to pause, think, un-learn and re-learn.

sharing real-life stories can be highly effective. For instance, a worker once ignored the rule about wearing protective gloves and suffered a severe hand injury, resulting in months of recovery. In contrast, another employee in a similar situation, but who followed the glove protocol, avoided serious injury despite an accident. Another example involves a machinery malfunction that could have been catastrophic. However, because the team adhered to lockout/tagout procedures, no one was harmed. These stories highlight how safety protocols are not just rules but vital practices that protect lives and prevent injuries. By showing the tangible benefits of these precautions, employees can better appreciate their importance.

It is important to lead by example, one cannot expect their employees to hold the new protocols sacred until the supervisors and managers also embrace the new modus operandi. One must also commend and recognize the employees that do commit to the latest protocols, and reward them accordingly.

Try to build "follow-the-rules" criteria in the employees until they unconsciously performing it. By casually checking and reminding the employees of the safety protocols consistently, employees tend to stick with the rules and abide even if we were never around them to check. However, be careful of an over-strict approach, as this might gave a bad side effect where the employees will only perform towards the rules when we are available and back to their unsafe act when we left them. To do so, try to resonate with them first, before reminding them of their acts. Get into their shoes first before giving them advice. They'll listen easier. You might also see some bonus respect from them this way :)

After a Near-Miss within our Lab Assembly are, we discovered that the failure to adequately convey work being conducted within the Lab was properly and adequately halted, created an opportunity for an electrical short to occur with initiated a short which under specific circumstances may have created a fire at one of the Workstations due to Power Supply maintenance. Specific communication protocols were created and training of all Lab Personnel was accomplished as the corrective action.

One thing I've found helpful is knowing how the safety protocols affects different areas directly. Talk to them about how it helps them on that level use names to keep people engaged. Quizzes are good if there are alot of changes being made at once.

The most important thing when trying to improve something or a process was firsthand feedback from the employees involved. Their feedback should dictate on how we should approach the problem. Because at the end of the day, they were the ones performing the process, not us. From their feedback we can sort of agree to an improvement that both parties agree. This way, they are more likely to follow the new improvement. Going in blindly setting up a new improvement without having a thought from the employees considered, might gave them and impression of strict rule. They are more likely to steer away from giving corporation. Resulting in a no improvement at all.

Además, de estar pendiente del entorno 180°, ya que todo CAMBIA rápidamente.

Visual storytelling based on real-life incidents should be shared on a central portal for easy access. This should include how the risk factors were mitigated based on the lessons learned and easily accessible on mobile devices. Gamification, Quizzes, and Assessments during training can make learning about safety more engaging, impactful, and rewarding. Finally, digital signage with audio alerts near strategic locations with potential risk hazards can help to increase awareness

Safety measures/requirements/standards should be incorporated into SOPs, checklists, maintenance work orders, etc. Use of words and pictograms should be applied generously. Warning markings inspections, maintenance, and replacement should be standard practice. It’s also important to remove any obsolete markings. They devalue other visual signals, confuse people as to what is expected, and may overwhelm or distract. Review safety standards as a routine part of change management and ensure all affected employees are updated as changes occur.

Indicate the reasons why it's necessary to introduce it now 11. Highlight costs versus Benefits to all 12. Highlight the requirements for compliance/ operations 13. Highlight it's nature i.e OSHA or insurance compensation 14. Highlight the legal recourse and company/ employers and employees roles and responsibilities including accessibility and operating hours 15. Give guidance on regulations and operating acts and monitoring systems 16. Ensure there's adequate communication to all besides training and education 17. Set up feedback systems and act accordingly

Tener muy en cuenta, la PREVENCIÓN ante de la Corrección, ya que muchas empresas no le dan importancia hasta que tienen el problema encima y en algunos casos ya es muy tarde, porque el daño está hecho.
