Following a fire accident at my site, I gathered the team to reconcile differing views on hazard severity. We compiled a comprehensive list of hazards and organized them by severity. An open brainstorming session was held to gather concerns and ensure all hazards were considered. I encouraged open dialogue so that every voice was heard. Each team member independently ranked the hazards on a hazard ranking scale based on their understanding of potential risks. I listened to each evaluation and addressed them with relevant rules to consider or dismiss ideas, ensuring everyone felt heard. We analyzed discrepancies and held a collaborative discussion to align on the assessment, building consensus and improving our risk evaluation process.

Have a conversation with your colleagues, you all have different levels of knowledge and experience whether they be as a health & safety professional or as a technical expert. You will often find simply listening to their concerns, brainstorming together considering all contributing factors you will be able to find a suitable solution that suits all parties. Not only that, if you include them in finding the solution you are far more likely to find that they will actually adhere to the control measures that have been put in place.
