I'm always keen and happy to try and push the boundaries creatively to achieve a directors vision. However... sometimes it doesn't service the needs of the production. Is it helping storytelling? Is it communicating something visually or emotionally? Sometimes its great to do a scene or a shot just because its cool. Other times it is just an indulgence. Having a pragmatic conversation about this, can be helpful so a path forward can be made.

My first advise would be not to arrive to a showdown. Creativity must be handle with care but if you had managed to built a rapport with your director and you are not defending a principle or your ego and you communication with him start from a positive position of understanding the reason behind his creative position rather than focusing on the effect that the position is materializing into, a frank conversation might help if not to find a compromise at least to let you understand why the point is so important for him/her. Worst comes worst you can always ask to shoot both version after having a non confrontational discussion and leave for a more calm moment the decision to which one is the one you are going to use.
