For me making food packaging sustainable , could be possible through various means like : 1. Reducing plastic layers and their thickness or transitioning to monomaterial. 2. Choosing alternative packaging formats like paper 3. Trying increasing bio-renewable or biodegradable quotient for the packaging. 4. Optimizing the packaging , its structure & its size as well as its design 5. Making it recyclable and making use of recycled content 6. Look for options to make it reusable/refillable However , it will need collaboration across the supply chain , incentivizing everything that increases sustainability and adoption of best practices. And, while we make packages more sustainable, there should be no compromise on safety aspects.

Need of the hour - definitely yes, but do the economics support the initiative is the question. Considering the volatility of the commodity prices and its subsequent impact to manufacturing costs, sometimes the aspiration towards renewable materials is off-tracked. But the constant endeavor should be pivotal towards achieving it.

I think in Indian market we should ensure policymakers and manufacturers are encouraged to prioritize sustainable options and brands are committed to eco friendly packaging solutions. Brand should not be seeing packaging as a advertising platforms but rather a sustainable option and initiative.

One of the best practice to reduce harm to the environment is using packaging material from renewable source & or biodegradable material. We can avoid over packaging for the product where it is not necessarily required.

Recently, packaging materials based on biopolymers and some cases edible material gained a lot of interest and started to replace polyethylene or plastic materials. Development of this technology would help to reduce its cost to be affordable and more sustainable for wider application.
