Why is a product vision critical for a successful product roadmap?

Alignment starts with understanding where everyone wants to land and why everyone should want to make the effort to get there together. The where is the "vision" and the "why" could be defined in the mission. Like companies, product can benefit from these structures to help negotiate countless small decisions along the way. Product, in general, can benefit from structures that help the team and cross-functional partners prioritize features that come in from customers and stakeholders.

When asked what your product vision is, the inquirer is wanting you to describe “what it is”. I find this limiting. When creating something new, it may not be something tangible that can be described, which is why so many founders, and tech teams have such a difficult time agreeing on the product vision. It is not until you understand what problem you are trying to solve do the ideas of the project stakeholders align. When the group ideates and thinks big, as in, “what can be”, the product vision can start to take shape, and the team will align in the development process. If you just declare what your product is, it may take a long time to actually create your roadmap, potentially wasting months of the market opportunity.

A product vision is created from a hypothesis based on the intimate understanding of the problem your product solves. Teams need to answer is the vision REAL; can we WIN; and is it WORTH it. Capturing detailed voice of the customer input helps articulate the value proposition and establishes the methods, obstacles, and metrics to build a roadmap, team objectives and key results.

A well-defined and detailed product vision provides a point of calibration for a company and/or a team. Additionally, product vision offers stakeholders an opportunity to achieve consensus on long-term goals and a higher-degree potential of sustainable success with the product.

A product vision should awaken emotions and connect with accomplishing goals, it should not only fit the needs but also resonate with improvement and satisfaction for customers.

We should always start with the challenges the product helps to solve. To identify them we need to be very customer-centric and investigate what our customers' challenges are and how we can add value to our customers. Ask qualifying questions to our customers is the only way to be sure we define the product vision correctly.

The late Yogi Berra was a genius in management science. He was able to put important concepts into simple, actionable terms. Why a product vision? If you don't know where you are going, you may not get there.

If you don’t have a vision, you don’t know what you’re solving for. If you don’t know what you’re solving for, you won’t have the highest possible impact. At Amazon we applied “working backwards” throughout all of our planning and thinking. Starting from what the ideal end state looks like focuses you on what matters. Conversly, starting from what you have and incrementally adding to it will lead to a mediocre solution. Having a strong vision, aka, end state or Northstar will allow you to make the right prioritization calls. It will rally your team behind your goals and keep everyone focused on the customer and business outcomes.

It does that, but more than a narrow “problem-solution” definition, a product vision incorporates its place in the world. It provides its “raison d’être” the most fundamental WHY that makes it worth while to even start developing it.

This is about going through the exercise of defining the product value proposition, which includes defining the "role(s)" of the target audience, the needs and wants it addresses for the customer, outlines everything from benefits to functions of the product etc. Ultimately this helps in defining and building the roadmap for taking it to market.

It is indeed the North Star of the product roadmap. Critical to ensure there is collaborative input into guiding this through between product marketing, commercial and other stakeholders that have industry and customer engagement. Also important to pressure test the roadmap with changes in the macro ecosystem the product serves within.

Needless to say, when the vision is Co-created the direction and scope remains clear and precise, yet flexible and open for any new ideas on the way. It becomes more of a low stress activity than a compulsive performance exercise.

Essentially, the product vision assist the involved team/s not to lose the sense of the focus to get the result. It has to be well accompanied anyhow by fixed points with date and reviews which are assisting not to lose orientation and keep things going on time; in my experience it is very important someone may supervise the whole activities to remind everyone - and correct - whenever needed

Product vision motivates and inspires external and internal stakeholders. It is such a great way to share the future vision which can drive engagement for those working on the product to recognise the opportunity to learn and grow in the existing role while helping recruit talent for future competencies you need to train and recruit for. It serves as a tangible way to drive engagement.

Every team member needs to see their share of value being created. This is very critical communication activity whose responsibility lies with the management. This will make or break the strength of the team that is responsible for its delivery.

The product vision should align to the business and marketing objective. If it is a product in a market that is solution and problem unaware your product should have a significant sustainable competitive advantage that when combined with a compelling brand story will help move customers across their value curve to recognize the problem they had not paid attention to and how your product is the solution they need.

Storytelling depends on what perceived values can be captured. The users need to see the reason “WHY” should they connect with your offered product or solution. They are not looking to buy a product, they are looking for a solution that can be integrated into their growing ecosystem.

I want to add some caution on changing your vision too much. As Jeff Bezos put it, “be stubborn on vision, flexible on details.”

A product vision evolves through continuous feedback, market shifts, and technological advancements. Initially, it stems from founder insights or market analysis. As the product matures, user feedback shapes and refines the vision. Adapting to industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscapes ensures relevance. Regular reassessment against organizational goals and user needs facilitates evolution. Successful products embrace change, allowing the vision to pivot or expand as the market evolves. Collaboration among teams, customer interactions, and ongoing market research contribute to this adaptive process, ensuring the product vision remains a dynamic, responsive guide for sustained success.

Product vision and the roadmap is indeed a living document and not something you put away in a drawer. But knowing that what is also important to consider is the roadmap shouldn’t be changed every time an existing or new customer requires something for their need that isn’t originally captured int her profit roadmap. It should be weighed against how it aligns with the core competence of the products and the iterative product innovation planned as part of the roadmap.

It might be a bit of a contrarian view, but it kinda feels that 'product vision' is just a new fancy name for product description. It may show my age, my grumpiness, but issa bit old wine in new bags/barrels. If your product description/vision/insert random word doesn't inspire, doesn't give guidance, etc it sucks. If people don't understand the why, the what, the how, the who and the when, go back to the drawing board

Vision is what separates a roadmap from a to do list. It often adds theme, connection, and continuity. The best roadmaps show a clear path for a vision to do as opposed to just a list of features some executive wants.

Product vision is table stakes to defining the product vision. While this is critical, what is also imperative that it is not created in a silo. There has got to be equal engagement between product marketing, product with input from customer insights and learning all aligned towards an overachieving business strategy.

A product vision should ideally capture the “job to be done.” That is to say, a vision should articulate the problem prospective buyers would “hire” you to solve. This is a more challenging yet more revealing task than simply saying “sell X to buyer persona Y.” If your product vision focuses on the job people need doing, it promotes empathy with your customers while forcing your team to ask how customers attempt to solve this need now. This framework gives your team flexibility while also broadly defining your true market opportunity.
