You must MAP your audience well. Just like you plan an intimate dinner menu and keep in mind the peculiarities and preferences - less spice, no meat, no wheat etc., try to learn more more about your audience and their individualities. Message and Purpose should be designed as per the audience.

Using humor to deliver a message, creates more of an emotional response in the audience member. Instead of being lectured to, they are absorbing a message through a humor lens, and the information is better retained because it is attached to a humorous story or moment. Some events find it beneficial to hire a comedian to reset the room between speakers. It keeps energy up and audience engaged. A comedic MC can accomplish the same results. Comedy for the win!
