Knowing when to fight or when to let go is essential but not easy. What made your business real is your passion and it’s this that you’ll draw on when you need to fight. There were many times in my last business where I had to do this and by doing this we diversified and double its lifetime. BUT my emotional attachment did grey my judgement so having someone I could soundboard at those times not as emotionally involved helped navigate objectively. Once you’ve let it go it’s important to realise that your business is separate to you, it isn’t who you are it was something you created. Reflect, recover, find some stability that will allow you to consider your next move. Trust me when I say your next business will be 5 times better.

So many people say "this is my baby," and end up losing everything they have to save it. A business is not a baby!! You can rebuild, restructure, and re-start. There are many reasons that businesses fail. The "failure" is not a reflection of you and who you are. Sometimes, business just don't work, no matter how hard you try. If you find yourself selling off everything you have worked hard to salvage a business, it is time to let it go.

You can take a couple of paths: 1) Have you learnt from the failures and want to give running a business another shot and do some things differently 2) Come to the realisation that the up and downs of running a small business are not for you and become and employee People will take different paths depending on their point in life.

Here’s the steps I take to learn from and grow from each experience. Closing a business isn’t a failure. It’s change and I believe nothing is constant but change. Here’s my action plan: 1. Step away, center yourself with self-care. 2. Once centered, think and journal all your thoughts on the why. Don’t analyze it, just document it. 3. Turn to a trusted friend or colleague and share the why in a deep dive conversation. 4. Capture the lessons. 5. Put it aside and focus on the future. 6. Where do you want to go from here? 7. What will you do differently? 8. How will you do it differently? 9. Who will be your target focus? 10. Where’s the joy? If you don’t get to step 10, rethink the plan. There has to be joy.

I think before you even embark on setting up a business, you need to be assessing your financial situation on an ongoing basis irrespective if you are facing insolvency. Whatever you are doing unless its totally unique, with you as the go to person for it and its something that your target market need you need to look at others in the same industry. Do your research properly. You know your product or service, don't leave it to someone without your passion. Be open to getting help. Whatever you are doing it must add value to your market and be something that if recommended people will just want without a salesperson having to shout "Show me the money!" down the phone. Plan for everything and do your numbers if the numbers don't work, work on the numbers until they do. Dust yourself off and lets go again!!!

If having assessed that you see the reasoning clearer than before you very well may be able to revamp restructure and refocus what you will do or you will realise it isn’t the business for you. If you don't have a trusted person to talk to failure can result in shame, which in turn is detrimental to your mental health. Identify a business buddy whom you can communicate with and share your business experience. They're the ones you can tell your secret stuff ups too, who won't judge you. They know they're more to you than your business. I have a wonderful business buddy, and when something isn't working, I trust them to support me.

Through my own experience, maintaining transparency and actively engaging with my customers has been instrumental in sustaining my business. For example, during the onset of the Covid pandemic, instead of shutting down my business, I persevered by staying connected with my customers, which enabled me to navigate through the challenges and continue operating.

The hard choices I made to pivot ended up being the best choices to our success. For me a SWOT has a double SSWOT - the extra S is for Spirit.

I think we also need to define failure not just in terms of loss, but also growing too quickly and not having the resources to meet the growth head-on. So, it's important for startups or small businesses to understand that strategically outsourcing parts of your company is not a failure it is actually a clever move to meet the demand that you have created, whilst providing opportunity for others to share the fruits of your Invention and idea.

If your business fails, every decision will be a tough decision. Try to keep your pride out of decision-making and evaluate your options objectively. Also, if you have to let people go, do it professionally and with kindness. Offer to give a good recommendation. Try to connect them with opportunities. Give them as good a severance package as you possibly can. Be human.

You should have decently developed relationships in the industry. There will be open doors. If you failed during your first start up, and you failed early, you have a tough battle ahead. You’re going to have to prove yourself in some capacity… Even more so, if you leveraged outside investors in your failed business.

Something to remember is to plan for failure from the start. Have plan b, c, and d in mind. Pick yourself up immediately and do not wallow in what could have been or what was as this can lead into self pity and doubt in your abilities. This was a hard lesson learned.
