What do you do if your digital tools aren't helping you create engaging online content?

If your digital tools are not effective enough to create an engaging lessons to students, the first thing to do is to carefully go through your learning objectives and the success criteria to identify what went wrong and how to improve the system. From the beginning, you ought to have share your learning objectives and success criteria with those in learning and technology to help identify the write digital tools to be used.

If digital tools aren't facilitating engaging online content creation, I'd assess their limitations, seeking alternative solutions better aligned with my objectives. I'd research and experiment with diverse software, considering ease of use and compatibility. Collaborating with peers, attending workshops, and drawing inspiration from online resources would inform my approach. It was in 2003 when I was teaching Central and South American, Cuban and Taiwanese adult ESL students an intermediate course in Writing at the University of Belize in Central America that some of my digital content fell flat on its face. Mediocrity crept in and the learners appeared to struggle more with revisionary drafts than at the start of this course. I looked around for fresh ideas and then suddenly it struck me when I came across an article on Iraq by Noam Chomsky written in 2003. It was so topical - he was denouncing the US's and the UK's invasion of Iraq. When digital copies of the article were made available to my students in the language lab, they produced multiple drafts of their write-ups and emailed me their final drafts!

Smartphones have replaced keypad phones because they have more attractive engaging features. Of course Mario can't magnetize the children of today who are playing 3D, augmented and VR games. Tools with limited features can not create engaging content , Canva, Adobe Express , Kahoot prod more specific and specialized options than simply powepoint presentation. Or doc lesson. Some tools provide you only text and picture facilities whereas others audio and video incorporation facility so obviously the other will be more engaging. Key adopt novelties.

Consider me as a constant collaborator. Yes, I will need to reassess my digital tools. I prefer to get feedback from my grad students. This is one angle of collaboration I need to interact with colleagues who also use digital tools for learning. This is the other angle of collaboration. Using my grad students' feedback and suggestions could mean adaptation. Why not? If there's a need to change tools then I would but only after evaluating where the learners and I are. After having tried a few edtech tools, I should be able, in collaboration with colleagues and grad students, to identify the better tools. Since I don't stand alone. Meaning the institution has a technology department I'd need to collaborate with the University techies.
