I like to think that before reaching out to anyone, we should always know how we could add value to the other side before we even ask for something in return, and try to provide that value from the very beginning. However, being honest with the other side, and not sending generic networking messages which have 0 value, is always better than just trying to capture the attention of someone with empty words. Before reaching out, learn about the other person, try to understand who they are as a human being, rather than just as a "label" to help you with what you need. Then networking becomes easier, with genuine empathy and care for others. The best way is to always give first.

Most people are not interested in transactional encounters. More and more, we crave the personal connections. So don't meet someone once and immediately hit them up with "hey, you wanna invest / get involved with my startup?" — and definitely don't connect cold on LinkedIn and go straight for the sale. And if in doubt, just ping them in advance and ask them for more info. Finally, remember to act as a human. They’re not simply for people to “take” from each other - but to leave a strong impression of you. So lead with gives and offers of help, and you will go much further. As the founder of a startup community in NYC - I’ve seen and believe whole heartedly, that magic happens in person.

A rule of thumb that I found very helpful when it comes to networking is 70-20-10! 70% of the time, you invest your energy into the network, connecting people, sharing your knowledge, advocating the network you engage in, etc. 20% of the time, you invest your energy to stay relevant and visible, sharing your challenges, progress, and visions – so people know what to support you with when the time is right. 10% of the time, you actively ask your network for support in overcoming your roadblocks and leveraging opportunities! (Always Be Creating Value) Strong ecosystems are built by community members giving to the ecosystem as much or more than they take from it. I'm a firm believer in always creating value for my network. Connecting the dots between folks wh should know eachother, sharing my knowledge and experience or sometimes, simply being there to listen without (too much) judgement. Start by giving. Those 'gives' are deposits you are making that payback in the future. You do need to be mindful of your value and weary of those that will always take but never seem to create value for others. Identify them and stop investing in them. Some things never change.

Give Back! Every founder and her journey is different! It will have some similar challenges & the solutions might also be similar, however, not all challenges are similar, & a founder will have her/his own unique way to resolve those. You as a founder & an individual have experienced these challenges first hand, & should be sharing it to the larger community... In all my masterclasses, I encourage founders to share their experiences, there is no right or wrong answer, it is simply your POV and the moment you share it, you are: 1. acknowledging that there was a challenge 2. someone might learn from your actions, or the way you resolved the challenge 3. and this might help the other founders to not reinvent the wheel again

Someone once said to me: If you talk to 10 people in one space, and they know 60 people in that same space, you get access to 600 valuable contacts..... not bad huh?
