What is the best way to connect with a networking contact on social media?

I'd like to build on Shruti Verma Issac's comments and add that I like to ask authentic questions. I am genuinely interested in what people do and how they do it. Although I am seeing if we are a good fit to collaborate, I am also interested and ask open ended questions - then read or listen to their responses and reply with respect. I enjoy the interactions and building relationships - some may lead to professional collaborations and others not - either way it's interesting.

I suggest the use of LinkedIn on the LinkedIn platform. Facebook and Instagram do not work so well on here, sadly. Though notably if they post a lot of photos and memes on LinkedIn they might not want to mix their work and personal life here.

Follow-up: Sustain the connection with occasional check-ins or updates. These approaches ensure meaningful and lasting connections in the professional network.

Be polite. Treat others with the same good grace and courtesy that you expect from others. Give an easy opt-out, always. Give before you take. Don't request of others in the online space that which you wouldn't ask of a real-world contact. Respect another's right not to engage. Essentially, stick to the rules!
