To perform mobile testing,you can use a variety of mobile devices which includes real devices as well as combination of emulators and Simulators because it wouldn't be feasible to test on all the real devices so depending upon the research and client requirements, you can use some mobile devices as an emulators or Simulators and some real devices can be used. There are many such mobile testing tools available such as Android studio, browserstack, seeTest etc.who fulfills the purpose.

Also, don't forget about more powerful tools like Wireshark. It's a monster at first sight, but you may fall in love with it. There's also a "Cellular data network simulator". It is a dedicated WiFi network to monitor network usage and simulate network link conditions for mobile applications. It uses well-established technologies: OpenWrt, TC, iptables and CloudShark. Both Android and iOS has it's own tools to simualte network. For Android it will be AVD Network Speed. For iOS it's Network Link Conditioner accessible directly from Developer settings. Also, check your Mobile Cloud Device provider; most of them have some kind of network simulator that should be helpful.
