(edited)In my experience staff are often in a rush, have done the task many times before, and think ‘it’ (a workplace accident) won’t happen to them! - Set clear expectations that NOTHING is more important than safety. - Empower your staff to stop and ask for help when they don’t feel safe - Create a culture of transparency that demonstrates an objective (not emotional / subjective) process of how incidents will be handled. - Close the loop on new ways of working and complete corrective actions promptly. - Introduce reflection statements. When a worker is involved in a near miss or is reported for an unsafe act, get them to think about how it would have impacted the ones they love and their colleagues if the worst would have happened.

Near misses should be viewed as wake-up calls, as they frequently precede actual incidents. Safety culture should be implemented as a top-down approach, placing a strong emphasis on the Goal Zero principle. While incident investigations and lessons learned serve as reactive measures to mitigate future impacts, proactive methods such as transparency, training, mock drills, root cause analysis, and effective reporting tools can substantially enhance safety. Periodic risk assessments and toolbox talks can also contribute to this improvement. Collecting and analyzing learned data through live software like Intelex can provide valuable insights into maintaining a culture of safety and reducing near misses.

Frequent near-misses are a clear call to action. Start by engaging your team to identify root causes and fostering an open safety culture where reporting is encouraged. Implement immediate corrective measures, reinforce training, and revisit processes regularly. Remember, consistency and proactive leadership are key to ensuring a safer workplace. "Safety isn’t just about avoiding accidents... it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels responsible for each other’s well-being." Wishing you a Sunday filled with purpose, progress, and a renewed commitment to keeping your team safe! Chris Clevenger
