How do you effectively communicate expectations to remote team members with varying work styles?

I find it helpful to learn all I can about the work styles of a person but also of a culture (company culture, ethnic culture, geographical culture, etc.) For example, the team I lead is based in the Philippines and I'm in the United States. I am learning the language my team speaks (and their local languages), I learn about their food, how they spend their time, and how they -- as persons -- like to work. We're a product of many things -- so it's good to learn and study the things make us who we are.

First of all it's important to know and recognize each individual style of work. After that, promove dialogues to define clear goals to be meansured for each worker. This will lead to a collaborative environment and a well known roadmap for each team mate.

Having regular video chats is super important not just for talking about work stuff, but also for getting to know each other better and making everyone feel like they're part of the team. These chats can help make up for not being able to see each other in person. Figure out how you want to communicate over video. Set up a good plan for bringing new people on board remotely. Make sure you're clear about what you expect from remote leaders. Try to be understanding. Use video calls more often. Get good tools for talking to each other inside the company.

No matter where people work, they should understand what they're working towards. Don't simply write it down. Have conversations to ensure understanding.

Regular meetings (asynchronous or scheduled) and over-communication. This is my team's bread and butter. When we do meet, I make it a point to address each person on the call. I recall something about the person, I share how they're contributing, and I might ask them to share their story. Additionally, as leaders, give your teams projects to work on and lead. Or (possibly better), invite team members to work with you on projects! Ask team members to give updates on their projects.
