How can you use scenario-based learning to enhance e-learning?

I view scenario-based learning as a way to place the learner into a situation where they need to apply their skills and knowledge. If the choices are well designed, it can be a real opportunity to get past knowledge retention to application of a skill to a particular situation or event.

Scenario-based learning integrates situated cognition, which asserts that knowledge is best understood in context (Brown, Collins, & Duguid, 1989). This approach embeds learning in narratives, enhancing memory and impact. It is effective when scenarios mimic real-world tasks, aiding skill transfer.

For me, it is important that scenario-based learning provides an opportunity to direct the learning process into a more practical dimension. I often use role plays to draw attention to aspects that may have escaped the learner while going through theoretical modules or to elevate understanding to the next level.

Scenario-based learning can provide authenticity. It affords the opportunity to put the learner in a situation that mirrors situations they will actually encounter on-the-job but in a place where it is safe to make mistakes. This "safety" in mistake making also means learners can learn from their mistakes and apply those lessons learned to actual situations.

Scenario-based learning is a powerful strategy in e-learning because it promotes active engagement, real-world application, critical thinking, and skill development, ultimately enhancing the overall learning experience.

Remember... Context is King. Far to often we create content-rich courses that lack connection to the context in which they are applied. This decreases a learner's ability to apply what they have learner back on the job. Scenario-based with personalization allows learners to be in their environment to see how the content is applied in context.

Scenario-based eLearning can also help folks learn what “it’s not.” We can use the common (realistic) mistakes people make on the job as alternative choices to the best answer, and show the consequences of each choice.

Scenario-based learning in e-learning aligns with constructivist and social learning theories (Piaget, 1954; Bandura, 1977). It allows learners to construct knowledge through experience, incorporating observation and modeling, enhancing interaction and understanding.

Every step of learning from introduction to assessment needs to match the objectives. If you want someone to be a baker who specializes in pies, there needs to be some pie baking in the learning process. That's why scenario-based learning is used.

One should not forget that some learners dislike e-learning due to its impersonality. They often lack the opportunity to pose their questions to the course creator (if the employer's LMS system does not have discussion groups for course participants). In such cases, the character we use for scenario-based learning can give a "human" touch to our course, creating the illusion that the learners are not alone with the study material, and the educator is there to support them.

Scenario-based learning equips learners with the opportunity to bolster skills to handle rare, yet critical, situations they might face in their work environment. By offering tailored feedback as learners make decisions in these scenarios, we further enhance their problem-solving abilities and preparedness.

When designing scenario-based learning for e-learning, incorporating well-crafted, engaging storytelling is vital for adding narrative and continuity. Stories not only captivate learners but also provide a realistic framework within which they can apply their skills. Integrating elements of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) ensures these stories are accessible to a diverse audience. Additionally, considering cognitive load is essential to prevent overwhelming learners (Sweller, 1988). A well-balanced scenario, rich in narrative yet cognitively manageable, creates an inclusive learning environment where all learners can thrive.

I try to plan more time for developing scenarios, as it is not easy to combine its content and storytelling aspects in a natural and effective way. I do my best to formulate responses in a way that even incorrect answers serve an educational purpose. Based on my experience, it also makes sense to test questions and answers with as many colleagues as possible. Sometimes, I've observed that for storytelling purposes educators add details that make the described situation ambiguous and confuse their learners.

Delivering scenario-based learning in e-learning effectively requires leveraging both technological and pedagogical tools. While the use of immersive technologies like AR and VR can be impactful, simpler methods such as branched scenarios also play a crucial role. These scenarios should be designed to provide not just a series of choices but also instrumental feedback at each decision point. This feedback is crucial as it guides learners through the consequences of their choices, reinforcing learning and highlighting areas for improvement. It's this immediate and specific feedback that transforms a virtual scenario into a powerful learning tool, fostering a deeper understanding and refinement of skills.

Examples include interactive patient simulations in medical education and virtual stock market simulations in business education. These illustrate scenario-based learning's applicability and ability to provide practical experience in a controlled environment.

Scenario-based learning's success in e-learning relies on thoughtful design and integrated feedback. Creating scenarios that are engaging and pedagogically robust is key. As Van Eck (2006) notes, the gaming industry thrives in crafting compelling narratives and decision-making environments. Embracing these game-based principles could revolutionize scenario-based learning, enhancing its engagement and depth, and equipping learners for the complex challenges of the real world.
