I think the most important elements of DDD is that you work with the business to establish a common language and acknowledge that different parts of the business may use a slightly different language. That's why this goes hand-in-hand with Event Storming. Aggregates, Entities and Value Objects are "just" implementation details that follow from the conversations with the business.

Sometimes developers dive too deep into DDD and in-turn make it DDD monolith design, where cohesion and inherence got lost in the details. As said "if you don't know how to use it, you shall abuse it". So first you should better know where you are heading.

I would like to differentiate without and with domain service: Without domain services: The Order class calculates the total price, applies discounts, and validates the order. With domain services: Three domain services encapsulate the logic for calculating the total price, applying discounts, and validating the order: OrderCalculatorService, DiscountService, and OrderValidatorService. The Order class delegates these tasks to the corresponding domain services. This design makes the Order class simpler and easier to understand, and the domain services reusable and easier to maintain.

I would rephrase that as saying that a domain service is there to protect the invariants that cross multiple aggregates. Because a business rule that can be protected by an aggregate should remain there. Because of that, you don't always need domain services.

In Android, the repository should be an interface and it should have an implementation to write a testable code. The repository provides a clean API for data access to the rest of the app.

There's two things I'd like to say about it: 1. Repositories are not there to hide the underlying storage. That always leads to leaky abstractions. 2. Repositories should be owned by the domain layer and be very specific to that domain.

A repository is an abstraction of a database row in a table or a group of rows, with those rows you can execute CRUD operations, is good to think in a "generic way", not tied to an specific DB implementation. Generally this is also related to an ORM implementation that can convert your generic repository call to specific DB implementation, in this way you can have back-end code that can migrate easily to other DB engine.

Service layers are often "I don't know where to put this" folders. Whatever organizational pattern that is followed, the service layer captures the cross-cutting concerns (ie. overlaps of aggregates, cross-aggregate invariants). Sometimes it's as simple as unique constraints across a partition or getting the order of a few events right (who was first? / unique problems). However, be wary of implementing invariant-rules on repositories and using services to access them. This is definitely a coupling no-go.

Once we have achieved that we then go on to identify the domain objects that are involved, the relationship among them, the operation they support and the associated domain logic. Important thing to remember is repositories solves the problem of persisting and retrieving domain objects without knowing the domain logic, whereas repositories host all the complex domain knowledge. My heuristic is that as soon as you need to protect a business rule that an individual aggregate cannot protected, I tend to introduce such a domain service. Repositories I use whenever my domain logic needs a form of persistence or querying.

However, some behaviors cannot be delegated to VOs or you are hesitant to have them within the entity itself due to SRP. In those cases, Domain Services shine. Repository allows an abstraction layer which decouples upper layers to Persistence layer. However, the community is divided about it. For example, .Net DbContext is an implementation of Repository and Unit of Work, so, some prefer to use a CQRS approach without custom Repositories. Nevertheless, it's a useful pattern.

Design wisely. 1. Complexity: Designing and managing domain services can lead to complex interactions and dependencies, especially in large systems. 2. Testing: Unit testing of domain services may require mocking or stubbing external dependencies, which can be challenging. 3. Scalability: As the application grows, managing and scaling domain services while maintaining cohesion becomes more challenging. 4. Leaky Abstraction: In some cases, the underlying data store’s features or limitations may leak into the repository, reducing the level of abstraction. 5. Integration: Integrating third-party or legacy data sources may be challenging when adhering to a strict repository pattern. Hence, design wisely!

You do NOT want generic repositories in your code base. It leads to unnecessery coupling and will make it very hard to optimize them. See also the Dependency Inversion Principle.

Biggest challenge is to keep the balance between all the factors of DDD. you may inadvertently make it too complex to maintain and support or too monolithic to waste the design at all.
