Be prepared to detail how you plan to INVEST (not spend) their investment and how that tie back to your vision, plans, and expected results.

Actually I think that you should aim to cover for at least 24 months. It is important to have enough cash to navigate potential roadblocks and have enough space to evolve your product / strategy.

In my experience founders misjudge the time needed to create and run a fundraising campaign. I use the word campaign purposefully. Apart from accelerator and incubator cohorts, the rest are going to need to give themselves 6-9 months in which to secure the funds they need to fuel the next 12-18 months. If you didn't start with at least 12 month's or runway you have to start fundraising before you even have a POC or MVP to show investors. That's bad. Don't start by asking investors for money. Start by complimenting them on their portfolio, then ask them for their advice/input on your strategy. People respond to that. Build trust by setting monthly targets and achieving them. Ask for money, get advice. Ask for advice, get money twice.

Don't be fooled into the death spiral of discounting. Know what your product/service is worth and price accordingly. If you don't have the sales and marketing skills to win and keep your customers discounting will only accelerate the explosion of your cash flow cycle. For most, people/staff are your biggest cost. Getting team members to share the risk by taking significantly reduced salaries (not deferred, forgone) can be a powerful support for your cash flow cycle. It will also demonstrate your ability to inspire and lead which will help show investors youa re the one to back. Just don't confuse sharing the risk with an inspired team, with being an abusive and exploitative employer.

Buy yourself time to pay the material costs of the business with open upfront communication with suppliers and your staff. If they want to get paid then they will support you through this process.

What cash on hand there is, should be guarded, as if it was the last ounce of gold in Fort Knox. That said, if a company has tightened their belt and cut their burn there are some ways to free up cash, such as borrowing against accrued tax credits like SRED. These credits accrue throughout the year, and firms like @Venbridge enable companies to access the value of the large lumpy asset that sits on the balance sheet growing until the taxes for the fiscal year are filed, and the CRA gets around to remitting the refund. This is just one way to help manage cash flow, but in times like these all strategies should be on the table.

A well-managed venture will have a cash reserve until it needs that reserve and then - it's gone. A pre-revenue start-up can't usually afford to maintain a large reserve so make sure your reserve, burn rate and funding cycle are all well-aligned and overlap. It is so much harder to raise investment when you have already run out of money. That screams bad management! Once you establish revenue with viable unit economics you will have the challenge of how much of the gross profit to put aside in a reserve and how much to use to operate the business. The latter has to be the priority but, they are not mutually exclusive. Don't build a large cash reserve in an otherwise underperforming business and expect investors to give you more money.

This is very unlikely to have. However - an alternative way to think about this is to create alternative revenue streams to bring in cash. This might diverge slightly from the business model. Maybe pure SAAS is the plan. But software as a managed service to get a consultancy angle in, to bring in additional cash is needed in the interim.

The best investors donate their time to use their experience to support the founder and leadership team. The generosity shown by investors to open their networks to the invested company can accelerate growth ahead of plan. Investor with professional accreditation in the likes of law, accountancy, and international trade can be invaluable in finding a solution for you, quickly. But to utilise this support investors must feel part of the team and that their contribution is valued. Remember investors want you to succeed.

Investor updates are incredibly powerful. You should manage multiple lists — existing investors, prospective investors, mentors, advisors, founders, etc. Each of these may need to receive slightly different communication, and you should determine the level of detail needed. For prospective investors in particular, updates are very powerful. Seeing your progress over a series of months shows them what they’re looking for — traction. The more momentum and traction you can show, the better. There’s no need to be fancy here. Just highlight your wins, challenges, asks, and show metrics. There are lots of great templates out there. Don’t over analyze this. Just do it.

Be optimistic yet don't lose credibility with investors. Show them you understand the risks and ask their feedback on your risk mitigation plans. It's ok to be a bit vulnerable, as long as you exhibit thoughtfulness and integrity. I always appreciated when a founder of an invested company would share with me his/her challenges and risks and asked for my opinion on how to tackle them - it shows you can trust them and that they're transparent and thoughtful.

You can automate your routine reporting so your investors get regular, frequent, timely information about your performance (financial, customer, conversion, satisfaction, production, etc., as relevant to your business). Don't be afraid to share well-structured information. Complement your automated reporting with at least bimonthly narrative reporting that summarises key news in an easy to absorb format. Supplement that summary with additional detail as appropriate. Don't keep using your accelerator template, make sure you ask your investors what they need, like and want. Then give it to them. The fewer surprises you give your investors the more likely they are to keep supporting you.

Be open and humble. Listen to the feedback but make sure to always communicate things as fast as possible. Investors are on the same boat and will help you navigate through difficult times.

One of the top pieces of advice that I give to the brands I back as an Angel Investor or to the organizations that I consult for is to not let a cash injection from investors go to your head. It can be all too easy to see some extra zeros in the bank and get greedy / lazy / complacent. If you are not watching the pounds as closely when it is investment money as you were when it was bootstrapped then it is easy to come unstuck! Have a Plan C, D, E… n It’s pretty normal for Plan A to not work out perfectly. It’s OK for plan B to not pan out exactly the way it needs to. Just don’t get stuck in a corner where you don’t have a backup for a backup.

Staying on top of one's cash flow is the BEST way of demonstrating to a VC your business acumen as a Founder/CEO. Points to remember: 1) Bootstrap as long as you can. This will force you to be critical on what you spend on. 2) Develop a "Cash Flow Strategy" with checkpoints...taking accounting to the next level. 3) Identify your Fixed and Variable costs...this will impact your burn rate directly. I had an experience where we had a pretty baked P&L for 3 years. Yet we knew that at some point we would have to find more revenues and/or fundraise again before 2.5 years down the road. As the time approached, board discussions became heated and things started to fall apart. Make sure even if your runway seems comfortable, that you have milestones and deliverables to ensure business continuity. Postponing those discussions has pretty dire consequences and relationships erode quickly as time evolves and the hard discussions become more time sensitive.

If you've international clients, have separate accounts in each currency and balance the accounts every so often. This will help you hedge for currency movements so you're not for example stuck with a relatively large balance of USD when the USD weakens.
