Connections and relations play vital role in mitigating the risk of crisis. Invest in technologies that can help identify fake news and misleading information about your brand. Keep standard response templates handy to disseminate in the press. Be authentic in your actions and align your activities with organizational purpose. Avoid engaging in issues which do not have direct relevance with your business. Admit your shortcomings and celebrate your success. Consumers like to engage with brands who are authentic in their actions and unapologetic for issues they care for.

Transparency as a leader is an important tool, today the public opinion to trust you they have to see in the leader transparency and honesty which qualities create a strong bounding or credibility between two or many parties.

I suppose one's everyday interactions with clients and colleagues will be the ultimate determinant of how you, as a PR professional, are perceived. In other words, respond timely to emails and texts and be a deliberate listener. Beyond that -- and this has worked for me since leaving the big agency world -- build a digital portfolio of content that reflects your POV on pertinent industry issues -- not so much Monday morning quarterbacking, but forward-looking posts that can be instructive for those coming up in the business. Finally, keep abreast of the social/digital platforms -- from TikTok to Threads to podcasting -- which today drive public conversations and reputations.

The masterful public relations professional lives out eight habits. Gotta be the same genuine you through and through. Pay it forward as a mentor for the up-and-comers in the industry. Build a platform to amplify voices for justice. Have a killer work ethic and leave it all on the field for your clients. Make sure they get A+ representation 24/7.

According to me, maintaining a positive public image in PR hinges on Clear and Direct Communication. Transparency, tailored messaging, clear explanation about process, timely updates, consistency, and proactive crisis communication are my go-to strategies. For me, communication is not just about what you say but how well it resonates with your audience. It's a continuous process of building trust and relationships. So according to me, clear and direct communication & explanation of the process are the key qualities for a public relations leader.

Reporters with whom I’ve most closely worked — dozens, over 30+ years in high-level media relations, crisis management and public affairs — told me that they most appreciated: 1. I never, ever lied or misrepresented anything. 2. If I promised something, I followed through. 3. I returned every call or message - always within the same day. 4. I provided *more* than they needed wherever I could.

Agree: authentic transparency is a vital attribute for PR leaders. Here’s another: the spine to push back on, and sometimes resist the impulses of, internal stakeholders. As reputation leaders, we’re counted on to help shape institutional behavior and messaging while assessing *how* decisions, actions and words are likely to be perceived. I sometimes observed a leader determined to do or say “X,” without recognizing or wanting to acknowledge risks or consider alternatives. (Some leaders didn’t want to hear contrary views.) It’s always a choice. With experience, I came to realize that quiet acquiescence, while safer in the moment, usually did more harm than good. And I learned to shape pushback in a way that made it palatable.

Everything and everyone is a brand. Think about how you wish to professionally position yourself in the marketplace. I'm a big proponent of using LinkedIn and its capabilities to express and build your positive image as a PR/Ad/IMC leader. Strategically choose your profile picture, your background banner, your original posts, the articles you post, the posts you repost, and the thoughts you share; do so with an eye on building and supporting the personal brand you wish to express. And leaders build people up too: click on your "My Network" daily, view the "Celebrations," and wish your connections well on their new positions, birthdays, and work anniversaries.

From my experience the responsibility of the public relations officer, in the last three years with over 50 appearances in the media and televised debates, is to respond to the interest of the public and the media in the context of the real event, is the duty of a lot of stress and responsibility. Staying proactive with the situation means being informed about the development of the event throughout the development period, from reliable sources and with relevant information. Experienced and seasoned, which he proves to be a noble task, but also challenging. It's like being that friend who always knows the latest gossip and trends before anyone else does. And when it comes to responding to feedback, think of it as being the best texter in your group – super quick, on point, and always knowing just the right emoji to use. Being proactive and responsive is basically your way of keeping things cool and under control, like a smooth DJ handling requests at a party. You're always one step ahead, turning potential oops moments into "Oh yeah, got this covered" moments.

In my experience, being proactive is essential for a public relations leader: always make sure to do your due diligence, "fully" understand who you are interacting with to precisely know how you can answer their needs successfully and bring an added value to their world. Maintaining a positive public image also requires to be responsive, engaging audiences as needed, with professionalism, humility and integrity.

Circumstances dictate whether to be proactive. Being responsive to media inquiries is imperative. Proactivity is essential in crisis communications to get ahead of the coverage curve. Proactivity is good for newsjacking and for making announcements.

One strategy I've found beneficial is creating a 'worst-case scenario' list. By anticipating the toughest questions and thoroughly researching your topic, you can address concerns before they're even raised, boosting your confidence. Being well-prepared also ensures you're quick to respond, showing the public you're informed and ready to engage.

Don't lie. Be transparent. Get the facts out sooner than the narrative can be shaped by outside sources. Be a good person. Treat people with more care than they deserve. (not saying they don't deserve it).

It's always a balance. You must be consistent in delivering against strategic business objectives but adaptable in how you deliver. That requires a flexible channel strategy, messaging that reflects audience needs and values, consideration of timing, and the willingness to adapt if your plan isn't working.

I believe that operating in a values-aligned way can help maintain the integrity of your work and your voice in any industry. And, do so whether or not others are watching or listening.

To voice the brand to be consistent and unique. It is very important to ensure that customers can recognize the brand across all platforms and channels. This helps build trust and create an emotional connection with the audience.

An easy way to be consistent is to always respond to the email and voice mail. I'm always most impressed by professionals who simply respond with, "thank you, working this for you," or acknowledge there will be a coordination delay. There's nothing worse than sending a query and...hearing crickets.

In my opinion, being accountable for the audiences that reach you for feedback is key. Being fast in answering that you are on top of it and also being persuasive in getting top management input when necessary. Also being honest and frank managing expectations.

My experience is that everyone's expectations can be highly demanding. So, it's important to have 360-degree empathy and respect. While understanding your boss's or client's needs and anxieties, you also have to understand that the audience is interpreting the communications from the organization (or individual) in a specific way. However, there is more control on the boss/client side; because there is an opportunity, as a PR/communications professional to control messaging. As much as empathy and respect are important traits, the most important role for a PR professional is to have a clear point of view. Honing a point of view follows the marketing advice of owning an issue, preferably by being the being the first to express it.

I am head of PR in a non governmental organization who sends clowns to hospitals, senior homes and refugee centers. As I always interact with people in very vulnerable situations, empathy and respect is the key. The patients need always to come first and it is crucial to respect their boundaries. If you establish a connection to the person you interact with, the story they tell you is authentic. And that is what we want to convey about our work: authenticity and human emotional connection.

Innovation has to do with new approaches; the strategic vision has to do with anticipating skills; discretion has to do with excellent connection between means and ends; consistency has to do with maintaining high patterns with high availability.

Be honest and authentic, stay in touch with your people and shape the story. Create a momentum and drive to win, give power to the people and trust and believes.

Offer positive solutions and demonstrate (via photos or facts) how to implement change or how you or your company is moving forward for the better. Example: community engagement or volunteering. Definitely have thick skin and grace. And to quote the ever positive Ted Lasso, “Be a Goldfish.”

Seriously. —Under promise, over deliver. — Normalize deep research and targeting versus spray and pray pitching. — Understand stakeholders and constituents and the importance of crafting the right message to the right audience at the right time. — Be a nice person. —Give more than you take but don’t get taken advantage of. —Provide a courtesy (aka free) discovery call, but not a second one unless you feel like there is a greater than 75% chance of doing business. —Members of the media, influencers, elected officials, etc are human beings too. Don’t treat them like crap. You’re either at the table or you’re on the menu. So, you and your clients need to figure out how to be there.

Public Relations is a reputation business. To be a successful leader, one must seize every opportunity to build one’s own reputation. It’s not just about your clients. It’s about you. Every touchpoint, every action, everything you say or are seen to do in a professional environment can either build and enhance your reputation, or damage and erode it. Be authentic, be real, be honest, be transparent, be vulnerable, be receptive to the ideas of others, give praise, give constructive feedback that will help your team learn and do better next time. Leadership isn’t just about talking or delegating. It’s showing and demonstrating to the highest personal standard so that your teams/clients can and will hopefully emulate.

Be the first to cross the aisle when working with other PR pros. For example, let's say you do PR for a platform and are doing a joint initiative with an advertiser and working with their PR team. Send them your target media list first as a starting point. This usually leads to them also sharing their list. This type of trust makes it a more positive and effective collaboration.

By being authentic in your communication, approach and style of working. PR is a function where you will always hear how it is so easy to get that small impression but stick to doing it the authentic way. Afterall the role is a responsibility that drives trust among every stakeholder

From the very beginning of their career, masterful PR pros understand and value the absolute importance of establishing and maintaining a positive, rock-solid reputation. Each day they are mindful of protecting it no matter what invitations, obstacles, or challenges they may face. We should never flirt with potentially damaging or worse, losing, all we have achieved during our PR career for perceived personal gain. Be careful not to play with a rattlesnake. No promised job, position, opportunity, title, perk, or perceived benefit is worth the temporary pleasure they may bring. After all, one’s reputation is all we truly own and manage in this life. Be careful about how you use social media. I've seen it many times where either content, associated content, or associates on social have caused damage to public image and professional/personal reputation.

Do what you say, and say what you’ll do. Don’t be wishy washy. Stand up for yourself, your team, and topics that you feel passionate about. Don’t try to rule through fear; it’s not the way to motivate people. Developing talent and leading a team isn’t easy. If it was, anyone could do it. And not everyone is cut out for it. Never EVER try to claim credit or shift the blame. The buck stops with you, so own it. It’s my biggest pet peeve when I see a manager blame the junior or try to brush things off, and it’s not the way to win people over or earn respect. Be upfront, be honest and be accountable.
