You need to be very clear as to what you want to do. If filmmaking is your interest area, start reading books written by famous filmmakers/ technicians/critics; and watch films made by eminent filmmakers of the world, and of different ages. Watching best films of the world, and taking notes, will help you to understand which role will show you. To be a filmaker, you need to have idea about all the departments; to be an editor, you need have experience to assist senior editors. If you want to be a cinematographer, you need to know a lot about camera, lens, light etc. Now, you need to have an idea about what type of films suites you; it will help you to choose directors you need to follow, or plan to assist.

There is a serious difference between receiving an education in the field of Cinema and TV and knowing what to do in this field according to my experience. The way to understand this difference is through the set experience. Whether you work on a set as an intern or gain experience on sets as an assistant in different units, you can learn how different units work and decide what you want to do in line with your goals. In summary, the easiest way to find your niche is through set experience.

Gaining film production experience in Africa, or anywhere else, requires a combination of learning, networking, and practical experience. While internships and entry-level positions provide hands-on experience, film schools and online courses offer structured learning. Independent projects and networking within the local film community can also be invaluable for building your career. It's important to choose a combination of these approaches that align with your goals and resources.

I had prior experience in directing documentary film / docu-drama; assisting top filmmakers of India. I don't think without prior experience of any kind, one can start a film. Before starting working on film, I started reading books on films, watched numerous famous films of the world, started writing scripts; and then I started following religiously what my mentor, eminent film director, Buddhadeb Dasgupta wanted me to do.

There are no two ways about it. If you don't have prior experience, then you need to find out what the local productions are and volunteer. Be open to doing anything on the set, then watch and learn. You'll begin to see the areas that interest you most - pivot in those directions and try to learn more without being a hindrance and over time you will grow. You'll be surprised just how far becoming a friendly helping hand on set will take you.

What every major filmmaker has been saying and doing forever. Pick up a camera. Start shooting. Anything and everything. In time people will see your value, and you'll have developed a portfolio. Focus on the type of content you want to make, and just make it. I know it's easier said then done. But it's also the only effective way of doing it. Reading books, taking classes is all a waste of time. If you don't know how to realize an idea, turn to youtube, or ask questions. Don't ask people for a job, ask them for advice on that one thing.

One thing I found helpful is to use the camera you already have in your cellphone. Camera apps like Filmic Pro and the new free Blackmagic Camera app allows users to control their phone’s camera like a cinema camera. Users can familiarize themselves with the functions and apply lessons learned right away. When the user feels comfortable with these functions, they can step up to a more robust camera system.

Study, experiment, watch films (even if its the same one dozens of times), watch behind the scenes docs, be curious, and most of all suffer through trial and error. Failure is a very valuable learning tool. The best laid plans are always the first to go to waste, so you have to be ready to rise to the level of your training.

Creating short films, even with minimal resources, can offer hands-on experience.

There are plenty of tutorials on the web which is a great starter. While doing so - use the equipments you have to start doing tests/trials. The Mobile Phone camera is a great place to start it -- followed with editing it on apps. For fictional content-requests your friends and family to be actors, borrow props, use available locations and make your 1st short film. That it self will teach you a lot of nuances of film making.

Volunteer! Get out there and volunteer. No one is going to say no to free labor! Go to networking events and ask questions. Watch YouTube tutorials - practice your craft with whatever gear you've got.

Whether it's cinematography, sound design, or editing, get acquainted with the equipment, terminology, and techniques. Online courses, workshops, and hands-on training are invaluable. Practical experience will be your best teacher. I encourage you to absorb as much knowledge as possible. This foundation will lay the groundwork for your success in film production.

Many film crew workers begin their career as a PA. The lessons in that role are the first to learn, and many of them are interpersonal. You need to remain confident, but not ignorant - be honest when you aren't familiar with something and don't embellish what you know. Another important lesson is that timing is everything. For example, I would not recommend a first-day set PA walk to the AD/DP/UPM at lunch and ask whether that truck is Grip or Electric. Understand your experience is not the priority to the production as a whole, but it is to you and rightfully so. Approach everything humbly and motivated to be open-minded, in order to better your own experience and career.

Creating your own projects is The original, flat out, best way to learn production better then you can learn any other way….simply because you have to And you don’t learn useless stuff, you only learn what you absolutely need to learn to complete your projects. And once you learn this way….. you never forget

Even with an ultra-low budget or no budget project, pre-production is key to creating solid content. It’s not the most glamorous part of filmmaking but in my experience projects that take the necessary time and consideration during pre-production prevent many issues before they even begin. Creating a budget, setting a production calendar, story boarding and script breakdowns go a long way to ensuring that your production and post stay as close to plan as possible. When you’re learning by creating short films, don’t be afraid to fail! Not every decision or idea will work out they way you think it will, and the lessons you learn now will create valuable experience you can put to use working professional productions.

I mentioned this above but make stuff you think you would like. Write it, film it, edit it. It can be bad. It probably will be. I wish I could tell my earlier self this. I made less things slightly better because I was to much of a perfectionist and they still weren't great - because I was learning. I still am - and this is how. If you try and make the things you love you will get good at making them. You will also watch more stuff and say, dang, i want to make it like THAT! Then, you can work to figure out how. You will also find others that can, and want to, help make those things with you. Then, put those things in a reel and show employers how you can make those things for them. I hire creatives based off of their reels. Prove it!

Purely from a documentary film perspective….if you are going to make your own film, I’d strongly recommend finding a story, or a subject, you really love. If you don’t love it, the numerous obstacles strewn across your path, will become insurmountable. But if you’re passionate about the subject - you’ll find a way through. And then keep filming until the end. I’d add one important caveat to that. Personally, I’d pick a story or a subject with commercial or newsworthy potential. If you’re an outsider, it’s much harder to break through with an esoteric subject. But if you have a story or a subject that’s in demand - that will help you get noticed. (Maybe save the esoteric film you love for your second film.)

Focus on telling a compelling story and developing your filmmaking skills, you can produce quality films without breaking the bank.

How can you gain experience without prior experience? That’s easy. Just go do it. Grab a camera, any camera, and make a “movie.” First, decide what kind of movie you want to make (narrative, doc, music video?) and the story you want to tell. Grab some friends to help or do it on your own. Be creative. There are no rules. Do it over and over and you will get better at it. Post your best work on-line. While you’re doing this, look for internships or production assistant opportunities. You’re on your way! One more thing. Innovate!

I am interested in making films on serious issues. For me it's very important that technique has to follow or be at par with the gravity of the subject.

When you have no budget you have get the most creativity out of yourself. Looking for props for free or maybe a locations without permits. These are real world problems, you can solve on your own within you no budgets projects. After your project finishes take a step back and look all the skills you learned along with networks you created for your next project. Keep going till you make it you where you want to go within the industry!

Film buffs must think of being members of good film club. I was a member of the best film club of India. I had the advantage of taking interviews of some famous filmmakers of India. Talking with them helped me to know many things. I had the opportunity of working with some famous cinematographers of India too. These all are helpful experiences for any aspiring filmmaker.

In my opinion, interacting and talking with the people involved in film production on the sidelines of festivals and specialized meetings can be useful and in some cases make the career path clearer, apart from the fact that these meetings introduce you to professional agents, it is possible is, even brought a platform for cooperation! Meetings like this on the sidelines of festivals are a golden opportunity, especially for film production students, that the opportunity to cooperate should be obtained from these meetings and discussions.

With social media it is so easy to connect with filmmakers around the world. On TikTok there is a huge community of filmmakers, who are supportive and helpful. I also found that volunteering at local film festivals was a great way to connect and network.

Film festival strategist here, so obviously I'm partial to festivals as a great way to meet people! :) I love the big ones (Sundance, Tribeca, Telluride in the US), yet I have found that regional and indie festivals are terrific spaces to meet filmmakers. It's not just about the parties, either. I've made valuable connections by just striking up a conversation while in line to get into a film, waiting for a panel to start, ordering a coffee at a cafe after a film. It's so much easier to start a conversation remarking on the experience you're sharing with someone else, then you can get to the "what do you do?" and "here's what I do" later. Good luck!

I believe this is the most crucial part of it all. First you MUST have the hunger to want to do this, then you MUST be willing to work from the ground up. Film production is similar to being in the army. You simply can't become a general without getting your hands dirty on the battlefield at some point. The best directors today are those that carved their path from other departments. Eg starting out as an actor, cinematographer, writer, art director, costume designer and even editor. You can also tell from their styles which department they most likely started out from. Hone your skills in these departments first then you can become a director. I used the director analogy because nowadays almost everyone wants to become one.

Tried and true way to get experience is to just find as many productions that will allow you to be on set and work for free in minor jobs until you have built up both enough skill at various jobs and have earned the confidence of the crew to take on bigger (and paid) jobs. Film contests like 48 Hour Film Project are also great ways to start building up experience and connections. Really, the best part of doing this volunteer work is that you build up a network. People like working with people they like, so if you're a good worker, and fun to work with, you will be in demand.

I wouldn't recommend anyone work unpaid within the film industry, unless they are specifically working with a nonprofit. The industry takes advantage of unpaid labor; Lionsgate settled a $1.3 mil suit with interns in 2015 - nearly a decade ago. Unpaid film workers are often taken advantage of; their enthusiastic willingness is used to perform tasks that paid crew don't want to do, disguised as "learning the basics." They work to "pay their dues" and earn their worth by pushing their personal limits to simply deserve a chance. By not compensating someone for their work, is to acknowledge this person is expendable. They *can always* make adjustments to their budget to value your time; living is expensive, and getting creative is free.

I quite agree. One needs a certain degree of learning, training or exposure to gain insight into a trade or craft. Field experience or hands on training is preferable or suitable to some instead of scholarship. You just have to find your niche, and take it from there. And when you do, you have to be dedicated, ready to face challenges. It is not really a "glamour business". It is like any other business in which you invest, produce and expect return on your investment which might be other people's money.

I always say start in the production office, because it helps get an overview of all departments. Anything from PAing, to interning, to taking a shelf stocking job at an equipment rental supplier, will get you in the door to networking and knowledge. That is ultimately helps you figure out what you want to do and figure out how to do it. Your network and your knowledge.

My advice is simple: just start! In this digital age, finding inspiration and a starting point is easier than ever with just a smartphone. Begin your journey by attempting to recreate cinematic reels using your phone, familiarizing yourself with storytelling, framing, and editing. As you progress and gain confidence, consider investing in a camera and a few lights. In the beginning, your work might not resemble the polished films we see on the big screen, and that's perfectly okay. Starting out is a learning process, and every step you take will bring you closer to your goals. The joy of growth and improvement in your work is immensely rewarding. So, take that first step, stay persistent, and enjoy the journey!

Be a background actor (an extra). It will put you onto a variety of professional sets in a short period, maybe even 3-4 different network shows/films per week if you live in a place like LA. You’ll quickly get a sense of how production works and have the luxury of being the observer.

"Why" always trumps "How." There's a sea of techniques out there for every step of the product journey, but just learning them doesn't cut it. Dive deep into movies, shows, or any production that grabs you. Decode the reasons behind each decision. Find out why the production did something one way and not another. By doing so, you'll grasp the unique demands of each production. This insight will empower you to enhance your work, drawing inspiration from others' experiences and forging innovative solutions. Good examples are to find out WHY Steven Spielberg used a dolly zoom in Jaws, WHY did Alfred Hitchcock chose to show the audience things that characters could not, or WHY does Roger Deakins light senes with cove lighting?

Find out if Film and Television work is right for you BEFORE you spend a bunch of money on education and training. Those who love the industry LOVE it...but it is NOT for everyone. The days are long, the work can be erratic and it can be physically and mentally demanding, at times. By implementing the steps above, get some time on set in whatever capacity you can. PRO TIP #1: Get hands-on, in-person experience wherever possible and immerse yourself in it! While I hesitate to tell anyone to work for free (because that's a surefire way to get taken advantage of), it may be worth it to volunteer your time if you'll be in the company of high quality film-makers who can teach you. PRO TIP #2: You can leverage your work into a movie credit/title that you can use to build your resume. This works on low-budget movies where they need a lot of help but can't afford it. So they may be willing to trade a film credit for your assistance. PRO TIP #3: Build parameters around what work you will be doing because, again, you do not want to be exploited (especially if you're volunteering to get a start).
