One should design a project that has variables of long term impact and set clear clear and generalizable goals. Research design is also very important, prospective cohort studies and randomized controlled trials can have long term impacts.

I am writing from Technology research perspective. Unless your research projects positioned at TRL 1,2 or if it is of Fundamental research, I don’t think it is best of the interest of the stakeholder and funders to look for Long term impact. Example, if your research is at TRL 5,6, then it is wise to research for HIGH value impact (instead of Long-term impact) and push it to TRL 7-9 for Industry to capitalize the value. Long term impact research projects needed Patient funding and if you are lucky to find the funder, then it should be possible.
