How can introverted writers network effectively?

Leverage your skills in a way others might not. Look up the social media (esp. LinkedIn, obviously) of some of the folks you'll be meeting. Maybe you will find some connection, however small, to build on and start conversation with, or to craft a question you want to ask them. Just something to give you that jumpstart. Listening, being curious--those skills don't require as much energy.

Unlike extroverts who seem to come up with interesting topics at the time of conversation, introverts need a plan. I recommend having a clear cut understanding of the event and the theme. It helps to connect with people or join conversations when the theme is the focus. NB: If you are an introvert, master courage to start the conversation. It helps you lead the direction of the conversation so that you don't get uncomfortable.

It's important to do your research ahead of time, whether you're going to a networking event or just striking up a one-on-one conversation with someone in the industry. In any case, ask yourself the following questions: - What do I know about the person I'm looking to have a conversation with? - How can I express refer to specific projects in a way that shows that I'm engaged and interested? Come into the conversation with confidence, kindness and information. Although you're focusing on creating a new connection, make sure you find a way to show how invaluable you are in the space, as well. Don't be afraid to toot your own horn in a clear and concise way, and show that you're an expert in the space.

I have done online writing groups and those can get quiet (and weird). You get a prompt and write for twenty minutes and no real networking happens. Juxtaposed to the virtual world, I find social events be an energy DRAINING. It’s almost like all the extroverts know you have this energy stored for you and your writing, and they want to sap it out of you. But. Events can help you creatively. The people you meet and talk to, they can become characters in your next story. You sap them. More importantly, after you sap them. Tell them you’re a writer. Introverted writers can initiate networking by doing what they do best - Writing. Social media platforms are an effective way to showcase your skills and opinions. Ensure your online profile reflects your personality, experiences, and skills. Following other professionals, initiating conversations, and engaging with their content can be good starters. Attending virtual conferences, webinars, and networking events are other options too. Don't be discouraged by some awkwardness. Most professionals are understanding and try to not overthink too much.

The fewer words of an introvert is not only from the place of shyness, sometimes and most times it comes from a place of avoiding to be vulnerable and or being misunderstood especially when they are much younger or not in the place of authority. Introverts are often deep thinkers who relates more whenever they feel accepted. And because of their nature of few words, many people do not always have faith in them until they sure establishes their prowess. An introvert should endeavor to relate more in an opportune environment because their words may serve as all the chance they needed for others to allow them the necessary benefits of doubt and most time that usual brings about the break through they desires. The above perspective is general for both extroverts and introverts because the difference between them is that the formal is regularly available and interested in chitchatting even if it's simply to catch-up and ready to make friends while the latter is seemed too serious and often blows things to proportions, atleast in his/her mind. The combination of both traits is the perfection to expertise which brings about balance to ideology and living in accordance to the present social norms

Communication skills are essential for all professionals. Introverted writers need to start with Toastmasters International. It’s a place to build confidence, communication, and leadership skills. It’s also an opportunity to make new friends with people across industries with similar goals. These skills can be applied to medical writing.

Post-pandemic, the opportunities to network online and via social media are abundant! Create a compelling online profile that includes personal information like where you grew up, hobbies, passions, etc. Those items can be great conversation starters!

Bulls eyes! Most introvert only needs to practice more their relatable skills and it's often better to start small than otherwise. In all do not be too shy to be vulnerable because nobody is an island of knowledge, we all build up the attitudes that eventually stocks with us.

In some cultures, a formal introduction is the norm. But, someone has to be the leader or no one will ever be introduced. Networking events, such as those found on Eventbrite, AMWA, etc. provide just such an opportunity to break free from social customs. I highly recommend that introverts pop into other people’s conversations during a networking event. It’s bold, but it’s expected. It will build confidence too because that’s why everyone is there. Of course, in life there is will always be the attention-hog or social dunce that excludes a newcomer from a conversation. Relax! I can assure you that these are not the kind of individuals you want to be around anyway. The ones you want to learn and grow with will welcome your presence.💕

Social media gives introverts the very best thing. A cover. An invisibility cloak. You don't need to be right there in someone's face. You don't have to make eye contact. There is no physical contact. Bliss! This cover helps you come out of your hiding place. Use it to your advantage. This is where your writing skills come in. Use them to interact with peers online while ensuring you are safe in your covers.

There's a reason why people turn to dating apps to find connections with others. Using online platforms as a writer is very much like that, you're able to call the shots and get your work out there on your terms. Unlike the spoken mediums out there, there is far more room for error in writing and it allows you to take a more structured and thoroughly-considered approach to how you communicate to your wider audience. Plus, without the prospect of stage fright, writers will be more likely to express themselves knowing they are far less likely to be openly scrutinised for what they produce.

LinkedIn really is a fabulous resource when it comes to networking. Don't be afraid to use it as a tool to reach out to people you want to connect with in the space. When it comes to initiating a conversation, try to remember how much writers and editors appreciate it when you reach out and tell them you are interested in their work and their career paths. Even though it can be intimidating, try to create a point of connection outside of the LinkedIn message. For example, if you're located in the same area, ask to meet up for coffee. If you're not, schedule a phone call so you can create a tangible relationship and real connection. It all starts with confidence.

My favorite (and yes, I'm biased) online platform for networking is definitely within the space of a defined online community where a shared interest is already established and some framework is in place for communicating. I've found that in professional online groups, and coach-led groups there is a respect element that often helps with feeling timid to speak up and ask for help or to just introduce yourself. In these groups, you are asked to introduce yourself as a new member. Since it's online there is a little less pressure than if you were actually going to shake someone's hands or be forced into small talk. You have choices in online communities to be hyper-engaged, an occasional contributor, or even just a bystander.

I believe introverted writers can effectively network by leveraging their strengths. They should focus on written communication, like blogs or social media, where they can express themselves comfortably and authentically. Engaging in online writer communities or forums also provides a platform for interaction without the pressure of in-person meetings. Additionally, attending workshops or webinars where participation isn't mandatory but encouraged can help them gradually build connections in a comfortable environment. Networking isn't one-size-fits-all; it's about finding the right balance that suits one's personality and style.

Being yourself can also mean networking at your own pace and frequency. Don't pick an already social-packed day to attend a large networking event. Give yourself the space you need to bring your best self forward.

I have found that online list-serves, online groups that keep a running dialogue on all things medical writing, are very educational and supportive. It can’t be beat. You make industry friends over the years with people with great experience. AMWA is a great place to start. The great news is that this kind of environment is very welcoming with less intimidation. You can be yourself, relax, share a frustration or 10. Someone will pop in and provide a helpful insight on how they managed the same issue. It is in these spaces that you can vent, if you need to, about all things medical writing, without being embarrassed that you had a question to begin with.

Let go of the need to be perfect. No interaction will ever be perfect. There will always be ways things could have gone better, and that’s okay. Even if a networking event falls short of expectations, or you said or did something embarrassing, the world won’t end. Maybe you can learn something from it and try again another day. Turn off the self-criticism, put yourself out there, and don’t try to be something you’re not.

Always give more than you take when networking. This means focusing on getting to know other people and helping them without expecting anything in return. Giving more than you take makes networking much easier for introverts. And it works better than aggressive networking. In Give and Take, Wharton professor Adam Grant reported that people who give their time, knowledge, ideas, and connections to others without expecting anything in return (“givers”) are more successful than people who focus only on self-promotion (“takers”). By giving, we build trust and establish credibility. Ways to give include sending links to useful content, connecting colleagues to other people, and referring other freelancers to clients.

Wear what makes you feel good! I sometimes feel anxious about attending professional events and mingling. But I genuinely have a little more confidence when I wear a suit (or whatever is appropriate) that I look and feel good in. Even if it gives you just a little boost, that might be all you need to approach and connect with someone who could end up being a great source or friend.

Reframe your perspective. If you think networking means you have to interact with people who couldn't care less about you or your interests, then yes it will always be terrible. But if you view networking as a way to connect with others who share your interests, who are sympathetic to your aspirations and goals, then the process is much better.

The organization to partner with really matters. The local AMWA chapters are filled with warm, friendly, bright individuals. I highly recommend the various meetings that meet in between conferences.
