When troubleshooting a system I frequently make a block diagram of the parts and how they are connected. I mark what I expect to see at each block and add info on level translaters, series caps, etc. Then I will add pin numbers or notes on where I want to probe when I get into the lab. In the lab I mark what I measured. I find this kind of diagram especially useful in a system with multiple boards that have separate power domains and high speed signals going from board to board. It also reminds me to check for return paths. Later, after I have root cause and the issue is solved, I clean up the diagram a bit and use it to explain to peers or management, and it can also be used in a Lessons Learned document.

I find that logical people can be great to bounce ideas off of even if they aren't an expert in the field. Sometimes just the act of explaining what the system is supposed to do and what the failure symptoms are will give me new insight into a problem. I have found SW Engineering, MEs, and a guy who wrote test cases to validate different OS's on various HW configs that were all very good at asking questions about issues I was trying to solve.
