Internship is a core to building your interest and foundation for your career. Working with strategic leaders in the capacity of supporting them for IT strategy internal and external can be a great way to get introduced to IT strategy. I look at internship team as the synergy where youth meets the experience. Youth typically comes with lots of imaginations and fresh energy where in experience comes with loads of wisdom and managerial skills. The symphony of this can produce great orchestration. Goals are typically made with the combination of inside-out and outside-in strategy. We need to identify current maturity and assess the world where it is moving. If we kindle this combinations to those interns many a time we get phenomenal results. Coaching and guiding are the experienced role which will enable the youth to express better and enhance the vision

Let’s get this straight. Strategy is not a thing. This is not just me saying that. If you search for Prof Henry Mintzberg on LinkedIn, you can read some of his publications from decades working in management research and education. He wrote “The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning” (2013). Read it. And disabuse yourself of the illusion that any of the strat planning ceremonies actually drive business. I wrote more than a dozen IT strategic plans in the 1990s but I have no idea whether any of them amounted to much more than a handful of beans. Nobody has a crystal ball. If you guess what’s going to happen in the future it won’t be the quality of your strategic plan. It will be dumb luck.

As a BA you will learn how to uncover what the business is actually trying accomplish and be forced to iterate back and forth with your engineering team to propose various options given the many constraints you will have. This ability to ask why is absolutely critical in IT strategy. Furthermore, understanding the trade offs you have to make to help the business with a feasible solution. You will also learn many business challenges can be solved with simple solutions. You have to learn that just because something can be done doesn’t mean it should.

An internship in IT Strategy would be one of the weirdest things I've heard of. Any intern interested in IT Strategy or leading at a high level, needs a mix of technical and business acumen. If you're starting out in your IT career, you should focus on the areas that are going to teach you the most about everything so that you can absorb the most information in the least amount of time. Like networking, security, or server administration. All of these disciplines teach you about data transport, security and technical concerns, redundancy, disaster recovery etc.. if you can get in a regulated environment as well like banking, government or healthcare, you can get bonus points in areas of compliance and risk as well. In order to develop an IT Strategy, you really need to have an understanding of the business, and an understanding of IT and how you can bring these 2 things together. An intern is usually someone new to an organisation and possibly quite junior in their career, so I’m not sure how effective an “IT Strategy Intern” would actually be. There are always exceptions to the rule
