When faced with challenging soil conditions in a landscape plan, the first step is thorough soil testing to understand exactly what you're dealing with. While it's possible to look into drainage solutions or amending the soil, the best approach is often to work with the existing conditions rather than constantly fighting them. Soil naturally tries to return to its original state, so why not embrace it and find plants or design solutions that thrive in those conditions? This approach is more cost-effective, less time-consuming, and environmentally friendly, as it reduces the need for ongoing interventions and artificial modifications.

Have your soil tested to understand its composition and specific needs. This will help you choose the appropriate plants and amendments.

If I'm dealing with challenging soil in a landscape plan, the first thing I’d do is assess the specific problem, like poor drainage, compacted soil, or low nutrients. Depending on the issue, I could amend the soil with organic matter, sand, or compost to improve its structure. For drainage, installing raised beds or creating a slope might help redirect water. I'd also choose plants that are well-suited to the soil type, which would naturally thrive in those conditions. Sometimes, working with the soil rather than against it can lead to creative and low-maintenance solutions.

To develop a sustainable landscape design, comprehensive studies about environmental features have to be done. I always make it a point to look into certain salient features like: soil and vegetation, hydrology, climate, and othe parameters. Following data collection, analyze each field of study and make a SWOT table to outline the challenges and opportunities. Following this in-depth analysis, I proceed with the landscape design. For example, I conduct specific soil tests on sites where soil problems occur to investigate the nutrients, texture, structure, porosity, among other related factors. I then consult with a soil specialist to come up with proper solutions towards addressing these challenges.

• Initial Assessment: Conduct thorough soil testing to determine the pH, texture, fertility, drainage capacity, and any contaminants. This will give a clear picture of the soil’s limitations and needs. • Customized Analysis: Utilize the results to create specific soil treatment plans tailored to the needs of different areas within the landscape.

Soil sampling and analysis is fundamental to understanding base line conditions and helping you determine a strategy for achieving your desired soil function. Soil samples can help you during the planning and design phase of a project for better understanding costs. It is also critical during construction for both imported and exported soils. Soil nutrient testing is typically what comes to mind when taking soil testing. Soil composition and structure tests can also be beneficial to help with drainage and water holding capacity. These are just a few tidbits.

Slow the flow. The more places you have to capture water and slow it down as it rolls down a slope, the more water will penetrate the soil surface and less erosion you'll experience.

If your soil has poor drainage, consider installing or creating a drainage system or creating raised beds to improve water flow.

Proper drainage in landscape design provides a sound balance between vegetation health and soil stability. Poor drainage can be responsible for waterlogging, which may damage plant roots and make the soil more susceptible to erosion. Plant growth could be enhanced by better drainage of the soil through the incorporation of materials such as sand or organic matter that improves both structure and permeability. Another effective solution is the use of permeable pavements because they allow the water to filter through, reducing runoff that in turn manages water more sustainably and does not cause erosion. These are the strategies widely being used in the sustainable landscape design.

• Grading: Implement grading solutions to ensure proper water runoff and prevent pooling in low areas, especially in clay-heavy or compacted soils. • Subsurface Drainage: Install subsurface drainage systems, such as French drains, to improve water flow in poorly drained areas. • Permeable Surfaces: Incorporate permeable pavements or gravel to allow natural water infiltration in walkways and plaza areas.

We are quick to default to pipes and drainage systems. Find a way to utilize site drainage, water, on site. We over engineer or landscapes, just to irrigate them because we have moved water to effectively. That being said it is still critical to provide adequate drainage away from structures and always confirm your soil types. Expansive clay soils can be destructive, and taking short cuts can be consequential.

Add organic matter such as compost, manure or peat to improve soil structure and fertility. This will help to create healthy and revitalized soil conditions.Use mulch to conserve moisture, reduce weeds and improve soil structure over time.

I know certain plant people say that use only the plants suited for the existing soil but sometimes this is not feasible on a job. I amend with compost whenever I can - I find the soil structure is improved and this helps many plants. Clay soils, sandy soils both respond well to additional organic matter.

When choosing fertilisers, including organic composts and manures, remember that Proteaceae family members are the ones that need a "native" fertiliser. That includes proteas, leucodendrons, leucospermums, banksias, grevilleas, and warratahs. Most natives would prefer to have the regular amount of P from a normal fertiliser.

If your soil test shows a lack of nutrients, it's essential to add adequate natural nutrients to the soil. However, the type of nutrients you need to add will depend on the plants you plan to use in your landscape design. Each plant has specific nutrient requirements, so it's important to understand the needs of the plants before enriching the soil. By tailoring the nutrient mix to the plants, you'll ensure they thrive in the landscape, promoting healthier growth and a more sustainable ecosystem.

• Organic Matter: Incorporate compost, manure, or other organic materials to improve soil structure, increase microbial activity, and boost water retention or drainage as needed. • Inorganic Amendments: For specific issues like clay soils, add sand or gypsum to improve texture and permeability, or lime to balance pH in acidic soils. • Hydrogels or Water Retentive Polymers: These can help in retaining moisture in sandy soils for better plant growth.

If you are using compost, get it tested. Compost with high ph can burn your landscape. Considering amendments as a management strategy that can help your landscape be more resilient in climate events.

Proteaceae plants in the same bed as other plants may be sensitive to normal fertilisers. Especially if they haven't been fed in a while and have developed a lot of specialised proteoid roots. Place them strategically throughout your designs.

Choose plants that are naturally adapted to your soil conditions. For example, some plants tolerate clay, sandy or acidic soils better.

Choosing the Right Plants for Your Space: More Than Just Soil and Climate When selecting plants, it's not only the soil, climate, and landscaping goals that matter, but also how much time and resources you're willing to invest in their care. If this weren’t true, botanical gardens wouldn’t exist, nor would we have plants adapted to diverse climates. The Japanese wouldn’t have perfected the art of bonsai. However, it’s important to remember that plants may not always thrive as expected, or look as attractive as you envisioned. That’s why I highly recommend choosing seedlings from local growers—they are already acclimated to the region's conditions, giving you a better chance for success.

In one of my previous projects in Turkey, we were working on a site with extremely clay-heavy soil, which can cause poor drainage and make it tough for certain plants to thrive. Instead of forcing plants that weren’t suited for the environment, we focused on selecting species that naturally do well in those conditions, like grasses and native shrubs. I also worked with the team to amend the soil in key areas, adding compost to improve its texture where needed. The end result was a healthy landscape that required minimal maintenance and adapted perfectly to the existing soil.

Plant selection is probably one of the most critical parts in designing a landscape. Selection needs to be performed in accordance with many parameters wherein soil has to play a major role. Your choice of plants should also have a strong compatibility with the type of soil you have. Native plants will do the trick, considering they have adapted themselves to the soil, climate, and environment. They tend to be less consuming in maintenance, water, and nutrients; thus, these are cost-effective options and sustainable ones toward landscape success for a longer period.

Similarly, in dry areas, studying xeriscape landscapes can guide you in creating sustainable, drought-resistant designs. "Design with nature" is key to developing landscapes that are both sustainable and aesthetically pleasing.

• Green Roofs & Walls: If soil improvement is not feasible in certain areas, consider green roofs or vertical gardens using engineered soil mixes that allow for plant growth in challenging environments. • Bioswales & Rain Gardens: Design bioswales or rain gardens to manage water flow and naturally filter stormwater, which can also improve soil health over time. • Terracing: In sloped areas, use terracing to control erosion and allow for better water absorption.

• Ongoing Soil Health Monitoring: Schedule regular soil tests to monitor changes and improvements in soil conditions. • Amendment Applications: Plan for periodic applications of organic matter or fertilizers based on the landscape’s needs over time. • Irrigation Management: Implement efficient irrigation systems, such as drip irrigation, to reduce water waste and provide consistent moisture to plants in difficult soil areas.
