You're applying for a new job. How do you know if the company culture is right for you?

To know whether the company culture is suitable for you or not, you should first research the company. You need to find out as much as possible about them. You could go online to look for reviews about the company. This is to see what people say about and think of them. You also should read their website and social media to find out about what they do and who they are. This is so that you can have a sense of what they do.

In the interview, you need to ask the right questions. This is so that you can hear from them directly about their company culture. You could ask them; what is their work culture? Is it a formal work environment or is it a relaxed work environment? What is the dress code? What are the rules and regulations of the company? You also need to scrutinize and evaluate the interviewer's answer. Is it a really scripted textbook like answer? Does it sound real and natural? This is so that you know whether they are lying or not.

You should talk to current and formal employees if possible to find out about the work culture. This is so that you can hear from them first hand about what it's like to work there. You could reach out to them on social media. Try and be friends with them. You could then ask them about their experience working there. You could also use platforms like Glassdoor or Indeed to see the reviews of the employees. This is so that you can have a rough idea about what type of company it is.

This is, by far, the best that you can do. Most of the time, the hiring process alone can give you a glimpse of how they are as a company. If you have reached the interview stage, you'll have this feeling in your gut if their culture and work ethics match yours. There is a sense of uneasiness right from the start if the working environment of the job you are applying for is not for you.

I'll give you a hint. If you're a writer, chances are the company's culture won't be for you. Most companies are shitty environments for writers. Too many meetings and interruptions. Too much extroversion required. Too much politics. Writers tend to suck at these things. So don't expect to find paradise in an office. It ain't out there.
