Future-proofing IT infrastructure is about staying proactive and adaptable in a constantly evolving landscape. Regular software updates ensure security and peak performance, while scalable solutions like cloud services provide flexibility to grow with business demands. Periodic audits help identify vulnerabilities and opportunities for optimization, allowing for timely upgrades. Additionally, fostering a culture of innovation and staying informed about emerging technologies ensures your infrastructure remains resilient and competitive.

For me, it starts with basics: Spend money on team development and skills. Whatever comes next will need new skills. Team culture must be cultivated to "do-it-right-keep-it-right:, Ad hoc and quick-fix solutions will incur technical debt that drags you down. Standards are key to consistently building on the previous progress. These can be formal standards or your own, but make sure that things are done right, aligned to your strategy. Don't skimp on physical cabling and switchgear. Design for scalability and reliability. Look for long technology paths. Better vendors have upgrade paths so you can move to newer tech without rip-and-replace each time.

Few things to consider: - migrate from in-house/on-premises systems to a SaaS model - move CAPEX costs to OPEX where possible (i.e. instead of maintaining WAN in-house, work with partners where they provide end-to-end solution (i.e. they own the infrastructure equipment and maintain an evergreen policy) - implement an evergreen policy where non-supported systems must be replaced or upgraded - continuous monitoring, vulnerability assessments and audits
