Your digital strategy team isn't as effective as you'd like. What feedback can you get to improve it?

If the team is not so good as expected, they main responsible is you as manager of it. So, the first thing is to "avoid the finger pointing". From here, what we should do is: -Share objectives and metrics with the team, so everybody understands the goals and the current performance against them. -Provide them with the right tools and work dedication to be able to achieve them. -Upskill the team in case there is a lack of knowledge. We have to be learning constantly. -At the end, if we're lack of a profile or we see that after all that there is somebody don't want to take part on the challenge, search for "fresh talent".

Start with a transparent feedback loop - encourage open conversations about what's working and what's not. Dive into the data; performance metrics don't lie and can guide your next moves. Ensure roles are clear; everyone should know their responsibilities and how they contribute to the team's goals. Lastly, prioritize continuous learning. The digital landscape is always changing, and your team's skills need to keep up.

In my experience, one of the absolute strongest tools in a strategist's arsenal is competitor analysis and benchmarking. Today we have tons of data readily available from a variety of sources, but what's most important is the ability to put it in context and interpret it correctly. This is where competitor analysis and market research can give you a considerable advantage, as you can now understand if your performance is in line with market averages, above or below, and adjust accordingly. It's also vital to never forget that this kind of analysis is both quantitative and qualitative in order to get a better picture. You can have high engagement both because of angry or happy users. It's important to know which one it is!

I realized our digital strategy wasn't clear to everyone after a strategy meeting. It showed me that hard work isn't enough if the team's efforts aren't aligned with our goals and I truly believe lack of clarity and sharing of vision can be as detrimental as lacking vision altogether. This taught me the value of making sure each person understands their role in our success.

One thing I've found helpful when it comes to improving something, is the consistent application of the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle. Feedback is crucial within this cycle, bringing high potential for enhancement. However, without taking actions, this feedback represents a missed opportunity. In my experience, implementing PDCA becomes challenging once a problem has already arisen. It is far more effective to establish it as a regular practice within your team or as an individual. By doing so, you not only prepare yourself to utilise PDCA effectively when issues arise but also capitalise on it through the replication of best practices and continuous improvement, even when things are already going well.
