Using the correct HTTP Verbs is of course good from a REST purist point of view, and using HTTPS/SSL is good from a security point of view. none of those will however improve your request speed. incorrectly using POST instead of GET is not slower. In http protocol there is always a tcp connection that will be made under the hood that can slowing down your request consider that when you are using an old http version like 1.0 because there is always a new tcp connection for every request you send and that's a problem, trying to upgrade http version like http 2 or http 3 can be a good move to optimize you request response

If you're returning a resource, ask yourself: "What is the minimum data needed to be returned?" Then, make a DTO accordingly!

Adding multiple servers in between API server can increase request and response latency. - Database Optimization can also give back a lot of performance. - Adding proper indexes (partial, full, functional indexes) on the columns which are used for filtering can improve the query performance. - Only returning data that is requried using select - Adding cache (like Redis) for frequently accessed data to reduce load on database. - Using CDN to store and transfer BLOB data like images, videos across network.

Just some tips. Don't allow returning a lot of records from the API: use paged responses. Check the data in the responses: are you returning more attributes than needed? Take care about database foreign keys and indexes. Check the queries for the most used filters and index the appropiate columns. Check for long and too complicated database queries. It can be simpler? Is this join actually needed? Select the right response format: XML or JSON?

There are few technique which can be used to return optimized response - 1) Return only requested data ( Can be achieved with GraphQL) rather than sending all data. 2) Use Pagination to avoid over fetching all data from database. This helps for large scale app as well as to avoid bottlenecks on backend for each client request. ( Utilize limit & offset on SQL ) 3) Have separation between database model and API response model to avoid exposing internal details and only send intended details.

If it is identified that someone is doing DOS attack, then you can improve it by using something like Rate Limiting. Otherwise, check if there is any slow query in the database.

Some other points to note - 1) At API Layer, utilize the virtual threads/coroutines to perform the concurrent operations for I/O or database or API heavy operation this also gives lot of improvements on overall execution of API request. 2. Have separation of your heavy read & write queries between master & replica setup. 3. Centralize authentication layer with gateway layer & pass on user information down to other downstream layer. Separation of concerns to avoid deduplication.

If after optimizing request/response, improving repository query, adding caching the call is still slow, try to optimize the design and consider having the operation async. When the call to API is made just start the async operation and notify the user/requester that async task started. Also it will be beneficial to have a new endpoint that can be queried to get the status of the async Task.

The other answers are great but I want to add a solution not mentioned. This is a more complex solution but if the bottleneck is querying the database you might need a read and write database/table or a completely different read database. The read side can be updated when you do writes. The read table could be flat and pre-aggregated and optimized for read queries. You can maintain data consistency with a broker or by CDC at DB level. The downside is that the data is stale and will be eventual consistent.

Well, there could be various strategies to address this problem. But before finalising any of those, it would be wise to know and understand the root cause for the slowness. To me knowing the bottleneck and where it is, solves half of the problem. Remaining part is just finalizing on the strategies.

When querying a database, it is best practice to only fetch the fields that are required by your application. This helps to reduce the amount of data that is transmitted and processed by your application, which can improve performance. To fetch only the required fields in a database, you can use the projection feature of your database. In MongoDB, for example, you can use the find() method with a second argument that specifies the fields to be returned. Examples of changes you could make to your API pattern could be: - serve your data async and pre-load a small amount into cache - examine how you are creating and making your API calls, what can be parallelized? - see how complicated your APIs are and if they can be simplified, for example perhaps they fetch information that can be provided by you

If there is a computation happening before a response is generated, check if you can improve your computation algorithm to use less resources. Check if you can precompute part of the process. Also, know the difference between high-throughput analysis processing system and real-time processing. They are not necessarilly the same. But sometimes people opt for a high-throughput system, for instead of a realtime system.

Overall, look for the API Architecture, and how you design it, and look for possible ways of redesign/optimization for increased speed and lower latency. If the API seems working fine, do a detailed analysis of the codebase/ backend - how you're serializing, and deserializing data! What data structures are being used? Did you use the most optimized design in your backend? All of these can help to identify the bottleneck and find the potential solution.

There could be bottleneck observed by client due to availability or network latency. To reduce this aspect choose the right kind of gateway or CDN if feasible.

Only data needed by the frontend screen should be retrieved through one API, no extra data. Tables within the database must be normalised which ensures no redundant data is returned. We should take care of cyclomatic complexity in the code, instead we can design a good query itself.

It would help to consider the following while optimizing your API for performance. 1. Optimize your database queries Optimization of the database will directly impact the API performance. Use fewer joins and bulky queries Avoid queries like `SELECT * FROM table`, instead fetch each field like `SELECT column1, column2 from table`. Use two queries if possible when you have a very complex query. This may sound not very clear but it will increase performance. 2. Avoid Nesting loops inside loops, the more you increase the loops more it will cost performance. 3. Do not send too much data to the front end. For example, if your frontend needs only the name and email node in the API, you shouldn't send extra nodes like address and mobile phone.
