The team must also have the ability to conduct a proper risk assessment and have the resources to put all the necessary control measures. The environment must be conducive for the team to stop the work whenever there are changes, unidentified risks and uncontrolled hazards.

It’s possible to keep workers safe even when they find themselves working in high risk areas; few ways is to; - Conduct a thorough risk assessment together with the team. This process, aside identifying hazards and controls, also gives the team a ‘mental consciousness’ of the risks they are exposed to as well as what controls need to be in place; -Implement processes to check the effectiveness of controls implemented as well as its practicality with the job being done; -Daily pre-start meetings with the team - A verbal and non-verbal process for employees to report hazards and have leadership give them feedback of these reports. Implementing systems combined with a positive safety culture will help control hazards in the workplace

Controls save lives! Follow the energy sources in your high-risk tasks and ensure the is a direct control in place for each source of energy. Direct control meaning that it prevents the release of the hazardous energy entirely or fully removes the capability to cause harm or damage. If the controls in place only reduce or move the hazard, it isn’t sufficient for high-risk situations. If you’re struggling to figure out what controls are needed, asking the workers who perform the tasks is your best bet for finding them (and should really be where you start always!) Ask them what they need to be and feel safe, productive, and comfortable with the work they do.
